Start designing high-performance digital lighting with STMicroelectronics' STLUX™ development platform

June 19, 2014, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company contributing to customers across a wide range of electronic applications, unveiled the 'STLUX™ development environment' at the Nuremberg International Exhibition of Power Technology (PCIM Europe 2014). The STLUX development environment consists of a demo board, a graphic configurator, software libraries, and a compiler, and is equipped with everything needed to get started with high-performance LED lighting designs based on the STLUX385A. The STLUX385A is the first product in the latest family of lighting controllers featuring ST's innovative digital control technology.
At the exhibition, ST showcased the STLUX development environment by incorporating all the features of the STLUX385A into a plug-and-play demo board and implementing a user-friendly ecosystem that programs PWM waveforms using six on-chip SMED (State Machines Event Driven) digital controllers. SMED is an advanced hardware-configurable state machine that automatically triggers state changes based on internal or external conditions, offering faster response times than conventional interrupt-driven microprocessors. Because the STLUX385A supports DALI communication for remote control and smart-grid connectivity, it can be used for energy-efficient lighting across smart cities.
Design engineers can control the STLUX385A by utilizing the serial lines and control panel (Console) of the STLUX development environment. The graphic SMED configurator aims to simplify innovative topology design to minimize power consumption during downtime and maximize efficiency under full load, while enabling high-quality dimming through highly precise current control. Ready-to-use application samples are also provided.
