CSR Launches CSR Wi-Linx Software Module for CSR6000 to Implement In-Vehicle Wi-Fi Hotspot
Providing wireless internet connectivity and information sharing capabilities to next-generation vehicles
June 16, 2011 – CSR announced today the release of Wi-Linx, a software module for the CSR6000 Wi-Fi chipset family that enables Wi-Fi hotspot, Wi-Fi client, and Bluetooth 3.0+HS capabilities in vehicle infotainment systems. The newly released Wi-Linx for the CSR6000 enables drivers and passengers to securely connect to the internet via mobile phones, tablets, mobile PCs, and handheld gaming devices to share information and allows vehicle infotainment systems to utilize services such as home media servers, diagnostic systems, and location-based information portals.

Thomas Carmody, Director of Connectivity Marketing for the CSR Automotive and PND business unit, stated, “A change similar to how the Internet changed mobile phones is now taking place in the automotive market.” “With the launch of Wi-Linx for the CSR6000 today, which supports Wi-Fi technology, CSR is providing core technology to enhance the consumer wireless experience in next-generation vehicle infotainment platforms and has made it possible to implement Wi-Fi capabilities in automobiles that can complement current Bluetooth functions,” he said.
Director Carmody also added that since the CSR6000 chipset has already obtained AEC-Q100 certification, CSR can quickly provide Wi-Linx solutions for the CSR6000 to automotive customers along with AEC-Q100 certified Bluetooth solutions.
CSR demonstrated the Wi-Linx solution, a software module for the fully functional CSR6000, at booth 26 of the 'Telematics Detroit 2011 Conference' held at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan, from June 8 to 9, 2011.
Wi-Linx for the CSR6000 turns a vehicle into a Wi-Fi hotspot by connecting a USB broadband modem to the car's infotainment system. This feature allows multiple passengers to access Wi-Fi for various purposes, such as streaming videos to the rear-seat screen by connecting a laptop to the internet inside the car. Additionally, when the car is parked at home, documents, photos, and other media can be transferred from a home media server to the vehicle's infotainment system.
