Producing up to 1,825 tons of liquefied hydrogen annually… supplying nearby research institutions, companies, and hydrogen refueling stations.

The completion ceremony for the 'Changwon Liquid Hydrogen Plant,' the nation's first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen production facility, was held on the 31st at Doosan Enerbility's Changwon plant.

This plant was built through a joint investment by Doosan Energy, Gyeongnam Province, and Changwon City, with a total project cost of 95 billion won (10 billion won from local funds and 68 billion won from private funds).

Here, 5 tons of liquid hydrogen are produced daily and up to 1,825 tons annually, and will be supplied to nearby research institutions, companies, and hydrogen refueling stations.

Liquid hydrogen, which can reduce its volume to 1/800 compared to gaseous hydrogen and offers more than 10 times higher transport efficiency, is attracting attention as a key means for mass transportation of hydrogen and promoting the adoption of hydrogen commercial vehicles.

Considering the absence of safety standards due to a lack of domestic usage cases, the government is actively supporting the construction of liquefied hydrogen plants and the localization of equipment and components through regulatory sandbox demonstration exceptions.

Domestic technology was utilized for the liquefied hydrogen transportation and storage facilities at the Changwon liquefied hydrogen plant, and liquefied trailers developed by domestic companies will be operated in conjunction with the plant.

Meanwhile, at the completion ceremony held on this day, discussions among local governments, companies, and government-funded institutions regarding the construction of liquefied fuel charging stations, the supply and utilization of hydrogen buses, and liquefied waterBusiness agreements regarding the supply and purchase of cattle were also concluded.

Park Chan-ki, Director General of Hydrogen Economy Policy, stated in his congratulatory remarks, “With the completion of this liquefied hydrogen plant, Korea has become the ninth country in the world to produce liquefied hydrogen, following the United States, Germany, and Japan.” He added, “The government will strive to revitalize the domestic liquefied hydrogen ecosystem through the localization of core liquefied hydrogen technologies, the refinement of laws and regulations, and the diversification of demand sources.”
