Micrel Introduces New High-Voltage, High-Density Power Module Product Family Suitable for Various Applications

July 3, 2014, Micrel Korea (CEO Young Jun Oh, www.micrel.com), a leading industry provider of high-performance linear and power solutions as well as LAN, timing and communications solutions, has introduced a new power module product family. The MIC28304/MIC45205/MIC45208/MIC45212 power module product family operates at input voltages of 4.5V to 26.5V (MIC28304 at 70V) and can supply currents of 3A, 6A, 10A, and 14A respectively.
This highly integrated power module solution is designed to deliver superior performance while simplifying the system power design process. This power module is a complete switching power supply solution, offered in a compact, thermally enhanced robust surface-mount QFN package. The device integrates a PWM controller, power MOSFET, inductor, and associated discrete components, reducing PCB space and component count to achieve higher system reliability. Therefore, this device is well-suited for RAID systems and network routers, blade servers, cellular base stations, medical test equipment, and test instruments. Engineering samples can be ordered from Micrel Korea or at www.micrel.com. The MIC28304/MIC45205/MIC45208/MIC45212 are available for high-volume orders and production quantities from Q2 2014, priced at $7.10/$4.85/$7.2/$8.88 respectively.
Brian Hedayati, Vice President of Marketing for Micrel's High-Performance Linear and Power Solutions division, stated, "This next-generation power module simplifies the design process, enabling customers to reduce their time-to-market." He added, "This module requires no separate selection of core components, simplifies PCB layout to meet EMI specifications, delivers superior performance while reducing board space, and is one of the devices currently available in the market with the highest input voltage rating and power density."
The MIC28304/MIC45205/MIC45208/MIC45212 deliver peak efficiency up to 93% and utilize Micrel's Hyperspeed Control™ architecture optimized for fast load transient response. This enables minimization of output capacitance, further reducing overall solution size. The module also complies with the industry's most demanding CISPR22 CLASS B EMI standards while reducing design complexity. The MIC28304, supporting 70V input voltage, is suitable for applications such as automotive and industrial robotics, industrial automation, aerospace electronics, and 48V communications.
The module provides protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal faults, and features an internal soft-start function that controls inrush current. It also offers flexibility in adjusting current limit and frequency (200kHz to 600kHz), as well as output voltage (0.8V to 5.5V). When needed, a pin-for-pin solution with Micrel's Hyperlight Load™ architecture for improved light-load efficiency is available as an option. These devices are offered in compact 8mm x 8mm (MIC45205), 10mm x 10mm (MIC45208), and 12mm x 12mm (MIC28304/MIC45212) QFN packages, and operate over a temperature range of -40ºC to +125ºC.
