Avago Technologies launches reflective optical encoder product line for low-power compact motion control systems

July 15, 2014 - Avago Technologies (CEO: Seong Min Jeon: www.avagotech.kr), a supplier of wired and wireless industrial application interface components, announced today the launch of the AEDR-87xx, a new 3-channel reflective optical encoder device product line. This device is ideal for stepper motors, electric actuators, piezoelectric drives, and portable medical devices.
Based on the existing product line series, the new AEDR-87xx supports 3.3V and 5V low-power supply voltages and dual analog outputs for direct interfacing with external interpolators for high-precision motion control measurements with encoding resolution up to 318 lines per inch (LPI). The device is packaged in the industry's smallest 3-channel reflective optical encoder form factor.
The AEDR-87xx product provides 3 output channels including one index digital output, with dual-channel digital output (AEDR-871x) and dual-channel analog output (AEDR-872x) capabilities. It includes an embedded interpolator for 4x, 8x, and 16x insertion (AEDR-871x) and automatic LED current regulation function. The encoding resolution is 318 LPI (maximum 1.25 µm pitch), with supply voltage of 3.3 or 5 V (AEDR-871x) or 5 V (AEDR-872x), and operating temperature range of -20 to +85°C. The size is also compact at 3.95 mm (L) x 3.4 mm (W) x 0.956 mm (H).
Hassan Hussain, president of Avago's Motion Control Products division, stated, "Reflective optical encoder technology is essential for various miniaturized motion control systems. As modern devices become smaller and consume less power, critical components such as motion control encoders embedded within these devices are following the same trend."
