STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across a wide range of electronics applications, has launched a new high-side switch product suitable for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial PC peripherals, and CNC applications in a compact size, supporting flexible system design.

ST announced on the 8th that it has launched a new octal high-side switch that combines intelligent functions and flexibility.

This switch maintains system efficiency with an RDS(on) of only 110mΩ (typ) per channel in a compact size that saves PCB space.

The 0.7A IPS8200HQ and 1A IPS8200HQ-1 have one side connected to ground to control capacitive, resistive, or inductive loads.

It has an operating voltage range of 10.5 V to 36 V and 3.3 V/5 V compatible logic inputs and is used in PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), distributed I/O, industrial PC peripherals, and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines.

Additionally, these switches can be controlled via serial (SPI) or parallel connections, providing flexible system design.

Both switches have built-in device protection and dedicated diagnostic pins to indicate status. It supports intelligent system management.

Protection features include output overload (OVL), junction overtemperature (OVT), short-circuit protection for each channel, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and ground isolation with automatic shutdown.

Diagnostic outputs include Power-Good, Case Overtemperature, SPI Fault, and Junction Overtemperature.

Additionally, both devices integrate LED drivers to indicate the status of each output channel.

A built-in 100mA DC/DC voltage regulator powers the LED driver, SPI logic, and input circuitry, and can also be used to power external components such as optocouplers or digital isolators.

These switches, which meet IEC 61000-4 specifications for ESD, burst, and surge immunity, are ideally suited for equipment that must comply with IEC 61131-2 functional and EMC requirements for industrial control.

The IPS8200HQ and IPS8200HQ-1 are currently in production in an 8mm x 6mm DFN48 package, priced at $5.11 in quantities of 1,000.

Two industrial digital output expansion cards are also available to aid in evaluating these high-side switches.

The X-NUCLEO-OUT16A1 with 0.7A IPS8200HQ and the X-NUCLEO-OUT17A1 with 1A IPS8200HQ-1 are priced at $67 each.
