Gyro-Accelerometer Combo Chip Improves Precision and Reliability in Motion Sensor Applications
Korea, June 16, 2011 – STMicroelectronics ( www.st.com ), a world-leading integrated semiconductor company and a leader in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for consumer electronics and portable devices, announced a multi-sensor module providing 5 degrees of freedom. By integrating a 3-axis digital accelerometer and a 2-axis digital gyroscope into a single device, it reduces size and cost while improving sensor accuracy and reliability, presenting new possibilities for high-precision motion sensing-based applications in mobile phones, navigation systems, game consoles, and numerous portable electronic devices.

ST's latest high-performance motion sensor module detects accelerations of up to 16g and angular velocities of up to 2000dps along the pitch and yaw axes. The advanced mechanical sensing structural design ensures excellent symmetry and resistance characteristics to mechanical and thermal stress, providing optimal stability over time and temperature in terms of zero-g offset, zero-rate, sensitivity, and more. The module uses the same micromachining technology process that ST has successfully applied to over 1.2 billion motion sensors already sold on the market.
ST's new multi-sensor module integrates five degrees of freedom into a single device, increasing system stability along with high temperature and mechanical stability and advanced power management options, and is optimized for various consumer electronics and industrial applications.
These applications include intuitive user interfaces for mobile phones, game consoles, pointers, remote controls, and other smart consumer electronics devices.
