August 21, 2014, Seoul, Korea - Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL, www.freescale.com, Korea Country Manager Hwang Yeon-ho), a long-standing leader in automotive semiconductor technology, announced today that it will host the 'Worldwide Freescale Cup Championship,' the final championship of the 'Intelligent Car' competition, in Korea on the 30th.

The 'Freescale Cup' competition has been conducted over the past 12 years as part of Freescale's university support program, targeting university and graduate students from countries worldwide. This year, through fierce competition across 9 countries including Korea, the United States, China, Japan, Europe, Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan, and Malaysia, national champions were selected. Finally, 17 teams from 15 universities and approximately 100 national champions will gather in Korea to select the 'smartest Intelligent Car' in the world.

This year's 'Freescale Cup' competition attracted approximately 35,000 university students from around the world. In this enjoyable competitive environment, they experience and learn key concepts of electrical and mechanical engineering, while also gaining insight into soft skills such as collaboration, communication, and problem-solving that will be beneficial in future workplace settings. Additionally, they can build complex experience and expertise related to the electric vehicle and automobile industries.

We hope that this competition will help students majoring in electrical and computer engineering and related fields to build autonomous vehicles, the cars of the future, in miniature scale and run them at high speed on the track, thereby contributing to the development of autonomous vehicles in the future."

Students participating in this competition develop Intelligent Car programs using component kits provided by Freescale, and construct them to navigate hills and curves on a virtual road without interruption. The completed 'Intelligent Car' aims to maintain track position and complete the course as fast as possible.

This competition is also the first event to apply future automotive technologies such as 'Lane Keeping Control' and 'Autonomous Emergency Braking' to Intelligent Cars. 'Lane Keeping Control' is a technology that recognizes driving lanes and maintains a stable path while driving, while 'Autonomous Emergency Braking' is a technology that independently recognizes obstacles ahead, makes judgments, and stops the vehicle safely. This technology is drawing attention as an important technology that will lead the future autonomous vehicle era.

The Korean preliminary competition was held in mid-July at Hanyang University, where approximately 350 students from about 50 universities nationwide participated and competed fiercely with intelligent model cars they had personally designed and manufactured over several months. As a result, 2 teams were selected to compete alongside the top teams from prestigious universities worldwide for first place in this final championship.

All winning team members will be provided the opportunity to participate in the 'Freescale Technology Forum' to be held at Freescale headquarters in Austin, Texas around June next year. This is expected to be the greatest opportunity for participating students to experience world-leading semiconductor technology and networks. Additionally, 2nd and 3rd place teams will receive prizes.

The competition schedule will take place over two days, August 29 and 30, at Hanyang University's Olympic Gymnasium, with August 29 featuring practical track exercises for all 17 teams and August 30 hosting the championship finals.
