National Semiconductor Launches Industry's First 2A Single Inductor RGB LED Driver for Portable Projectors
Compact LM3435 with Sequential LED Drive and Built-in I2C Control Interface
June 13, 2011 – National Semiconductor Korea (CEO: Choi Chung-won) announced today the industry's first launch of a 2A RGB LED driver for portable projectors. National's highly integrated new LED driver, the LM3435, is ideal for portable projectors that sequentially drive three common anode high brightness RGB LEDs with a single inductor, and features a built-in I2C control interface for LED current control.

Today, most portable or pocket projector LED designs require separate drivers for each red, green, and blue LED, with each circuit requiring one inductor. This increases product size, design cost, and necessitates multiple component configurations to properly drive the LEDs. However, pocket projectors are becoming popular because they are smaller than 2.5" portable hard drives and can be used in space-constrained environments. By using National's single LM3435 LED driver, three RGB LEDs are driven sequentially, addressing size and cost issues that arise during the design phase. The LM3435 LED driver supplies power to each LED in sequence at less than 60Hz, meeting operational requirements of the latest LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicone) or DLP (Digital Light Processing) image devices. Additionally, the design approach is much simpler and can be easily designed with just one inductor and a few passive components alongside the driver.
National's LM3435 LED driver is part of National's high brightness projector driver product family, alongside the LM3433 and LM3434 with high frequency dimming and the LM3549 0.7A sequential mode LED driver.
National demonstrated the LM3466 at the Guangzhou International Lighting Fair (Hall 8.1, Booth A43) held in Guangzhou, China from June 9 to 12.
Technical Features of National's LM3435 LED Driver
National's LM3435 RGB LED driver is a compact, highly integrated switched-mode constant current regulator that drives three LEDs in sequential mode with a single inductor. The LM3435 integrates active components including an N-channel main MOSFET, P-channel synchronous MOSFET, and three N-channel pass switches for individual LED control
