TI Launches Industry's First Fully Integrated LED Matrix Manager for Adaptive Automotive Headlight Systems
Save 73% of board space with a scalable, ultra-compact solution and
Control of up to 96 high-brightness LEDs in innovative headlamps
TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) October 22, 2014 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) has launched the industry's first fully integrated high-brightness LED matrix manager IC for adaptive automotive headlight systems. The new TPS92661-Q1 is a scalable, ultra-compact solution that enables automotive manufacturers to develop innovative LED headlamps that provide road-optimized illumination and enhance driver safety by dynamically adjusting beam patterns and light intensity. (For more information on the TPS92661-Q1, samples, and evaluation modules, please visit www.ti.com/tps92661q-pr )
TPS92661-Q1 is being showcased at the SAE Convergence Conference and Exhibition (Booth #217), held in Detroit, Michigan, USA, from October 21 to 22.
Adaptive headlamp systems, which are currently installed only in luxury vehicles but are expected to spread to mass-market models within the next few years, automatically manage the direction and intensity of high and low beams. The TPS92661-Q1 is an ultra-compact solution containing a FET dimming array connected in parallel with high-brightness LEDs, and includes 12 MOSFET switches that regulate the current passing through the connected LEDs or the surrounding current, enabling individual pixel-level lighting control. In addition, control and diagnostic functions can be seamlessly performed on master microcontrollers such as TI’s AEC-Q100 certified C2000™ Piccolo™ through the serial communication port.
Until recently, adaptive headlamp designs required significant board space to accommodate bulky discrete circuits, including multiple transistors, gate drivers, and glue logic, to implement headlamp beam shaping and direction control. However, the TPS92661-Q1 can reduce board space by up to 73% by replacing complex designs with a single chip, and enables the implementation of a completely solid-state headlamp system that does not include any wear-prone moving parts such as motors and actuators.
Key Features and Advantages of TPS92661-Q1
• Control up to 96 LEDs from a single serial port for headlamp beam shaping and direction control
• Individual 10-bit pulse PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) brightness-controlled LEDs with pixel-level lighting intensity adjustment
• LED open/short circuit error diagnosis and reporting function warns the driver via the master microcontroller in the event of headlamp failure or damage.
Supply timing, packaging, and price
The TPS92661-Q1 is available for bulk purchase through TI and TI authorized distributors. It is available in a 48-pin HTQFP package, and is priced at $3.70 per unit for quantities of 1,000.
LED Lighting Tools and Support
You can order the TPS92661EVM-001 evaluation module for automotive exterior lighting, which allows you to demonstrate individual PWM brightness control for each LED.
