Seoul, October 22, 2014 – Microchip Technology (Korea Representative: Byung-Don Han), a global leader in microcontrollers, analog semiconductors, and flash-IP solutions, announced the release of its latest high-performance digital power analog controllers, the MCP19118 and MCP19119 (MCP19118/9).
These two new products provide simple yet effective analog PWM control for DC-DC synchronous buck converters up to 40V, along with the configuration capabilities of a digital MCU. They are also the industry's first devices to combine 40V operation with a PMBus™ communication interface. Based on these capabilities, high-speed power conversion circuits with embedded analog control loops that are programmable on firmware within an 8-bit MCU core can be developed. These products offer ideal integration and flexibility for power conversion applications such as battery charging, LED driving, USB power delivery, point-of-load (POL), and automotive power supplies.
The demand for digitally controlled power supplies is surging as they provide configuration capabilities for various operating conditions and topologies, and power system developers are increasingly requiring the ability to report telemetry data and perform two-way communication for monitoring and fault reporting via standard communication interfaces such as PMBus. In addition, recently released USB charging standards (USB power supply and USB Type-C connectors) include variable charging voltage features, which enable rapid charging of devices but may potentially make hardware requirements more stringent. 
The MCP19118/9 device integrates a monitoring microcontroller, enabling the development of programmable power supplies. Key system settings, such as switching frequency (100 kHz to 1.6 MHz), current limits, and voltage setpoints, can be adjusted immediately during operation via write commands to registers within the device. Additionally, since a single design can be reused across multiple platforms by changing settings via firmware updates, design, production, and inventory requirements are minimized. Furthermore, the integrated MCU core can be used to monitor other parts of the application to specify startup task sequences, intelligently manage faults, undervoltage, or brown-out conditions, perform housekeeping functions, adjust output based on load requirements (such as battery charging or USB port power), and support the module's external interfaces (monitoring users or systems or transmitting signals). The MCP19118/9 device integrates a linear regulator, PWM generator, ADC, MOSFET driver, analog error amplifier, and control loop compensation function, providing a very compact circuit solution. When properly implemented, this system offers high conversion efficiency and excellent transient response, which can reduce system power loss in portable applications, miniaturize heatsinks, and further extend battery life. These high-performance digital power analog controller devices can also provide data over the I2C™ interface using customized SMBus or PMBus compatible commands.

Development support
Programming support for MCP19118/9 is provided through the MCP19111 Design Analyzer and the MCP19111 Graphical User Interface Plug-in for MPLAB® X IDE. These two software tools are available for free download right now in the Documentation & Software section of the link above. In addition, you can find instructions on how to use these tools in Application Note AN1541.
Microchip’s standard full suite of development tools, including MPLAB X IDE (Integrated Development Environment), PICkit™ 3 (part number PG164130), PICkit Serial Analyzer (part number DV164122), and MPLAB XC8 Compiler, also supports this MCP19118/9 high-performance digital power analog controller.

Both the MCP19118 and MCP19119 are currently available for sample supply and mass production, and are supplied in units of 5,000. The MCP19118 is available in a 4x4 mm 24-pin QFN package, and the MCP19119 is available in a 5x5 mm 28-pin QFN package.
