Micrel's 3A/5A Synchronous Buck Regulator Delivering Ultra-Fast Transient Response and 95% Peak Efficiency
October 23, 2014 – Micrel Korea (CEO Young-jun Oh, www.micrel.com), a leading industry provider of high-performance linear and power solutions as well as LAN, timing, and communications solutions, announced that it is supplying synchronous buck regulators MIC4930 and MIC4950 based on its proprietary Hyper Speed Control™ architecture. These devices feature high efficiency up to 95% and ultra-fast transient response characteristics, making them well-suited for powering processor cores as well as 5V I/O voltage or 3.3V bus power supplies.
The MIC4930 and MIC4950 operate across an input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V and support output current control up to 3A (MIC4930) and 5A (MIC4950). The MIC4930 provides switching frequency up to 3.3MHz and achieves 95% peak efficiency. This high-frequency operating characteristic enables very low output ripple voltage across the entire load range using only small output capacitors. Both devices are designed to work with inductors as small as 1µH and small output ceramic capacitors as low as 10µF without requiring external ripple injection. Additionally, various types of output capacitors can be applied, and safe startup is supported through pre-biased output.
Micrel's Hyper Speed Control architecture delivers ultra-fast transient response while enabling reduced output capacitance and allowing high input voltage to low output voltage operation. This adaptive on-time ripple control architecture enables a single device to achieve the benefits of both fixed-frequency operation and fast transient response.
Micrel's synchronous buck regulator devices MIC4930 and MIC4950 feature a junction temperature range from -40℃ to +125℃ and are supplied in 8-pin SOIC (MIC4950) and 10-pin 3mm x 4mm x 0.85mm DFN packages. Primary target applications include DTV, set-top boxes, printers, DVD players, and distributed power supplies.
