TI Expands Industrial Microcontroller Portfolio for Accurate and Precise Measurement by Integrating Smart Analog
MSP430™ i-Series Microcontrollers Suitable for Cost-Sensitive Applications such as Factory/Building Automation, Energy Metering, and Industrial Lighting
TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) November 12, 2014 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the launch of the MSP430™ industrial microcontroller (MCU) series, which integrates smart analogs to provide high accuracy, precision, and cost savings. The MSP430i204x MCUs meet the wide temperature range of -40°C to 105°C required for industrial and smart grid applications. The new MSP430 i-series MCUs are suitable for a variety of cost-sensitive industrial sectors, such as occupancy sensors, remote temperature and pressure transmitters, and power monitoring.
The new MSP430i204x industrial MCUs integrate smart analogs, such as up to four integrated sigma-delta analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), providing accuracy and precision as low as 0.5% in smart metering products across a 2000:1 operating range. The MSP430i204x MCUs also feature a built-in digitally controlled oscillator (DCO), eliminating the need for an external crystal. Furthermore, their compact package allows designers to increase accuracy while reducing board space and system costs.
When developing with the new MSP430i204x industrial MCU, developers can choose 16KB or 32KB of flash memory and can also extend the design using integrated analogs such as the sigma-delta analog front end (AFE). TI helps developers easily get started with designing single-phase smart meters, sub-metering, and smart plugs by providing comprehensive TI Designs that include schematics, block diagrams, Bill of Materials (BOM), design files, and test reports. This complete industrial reference design also includes design details related to TI's complementary TPS54060 step-down (buck) converter and SimpleLink™ Wi-Fi CC3200 wireless MCU, enabling communication with other connected devices. In addition, developers can further reduce board space and system costs while maintaining high accuracy in their designs by using TI’s DAC8760 digital-to-analog converter (DAC) family, which is suitable for 4 to 20 mA current loop industrial sensor applications.

The 16KB flash-embedded MSP430i2040 MCU is available for immediate purchase at a price of $1.70 per 1,000 units. The 32KB flash-embedded MSP430i2041 MCU is priced at $1.75 per 1,000 units. Developers can start industrial designs using the sub-metering EVM MSP430-i2040SUBMTR ($99) or the MSP-TS430RHB32A target board ($115).
