STMicroelectronics Develops World's First Set-Top Box Platform Supporting Android TV 5.0 Lollipop
November 12, 2014, Seoul – STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor company contributing to customers across various electronic applications and a leading manufacturer of System-on-Chips (SoCs) for High-Definition (HD) and Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) set-top boxes, has unveiled the world's first set-top box platform for Google Android TV based on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
With this new platform, users can enjoy the entire Android ecosystem, including popular Android games, apps, and services, as well as Android TV. This achievement was made possible by the combination of ST’s proprietary security mechanisms embedded in the platform’s SoC chip and cutting-edge decoding, transcoding, and graphics processing capabilities.
This STiH412 (Monaco)-based Android 5.0 platform is currently available for market distribution and offers the following advanced set-top box features.
• HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) multi-decoding for PIP (Picture in Picture) function.
• Equipped with a special SoC architecture that optimizes game vividness and enables 3D user interfaces by smoothly executing Ultra HD video decoding with cutting-edge graphics performance and a high-efficiency offload processor.
• Transcoding function that transmits broadcast content on smartphones, tablets, and home second screens without consuming broadband connection bandwidth
• VP8 encoder for Google Hangout™ support
• Power efficiency for fanless and small form factor boxes
Gian Luca Bertino, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Products Group at ST, said, “This new platform will continue to contribute to ST’s success as Android-based set-top boxes become mass-produced. This will also help ST quickly roll out the latest Android TV 5.0 Lollipop version by offering attractive terms to pay TV operators.”
