– Setting a new standard for low switching losses and high power density

Seoul, November 17, 2014 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) is expanding its IGBT portfolio with the TO-247 4-pin Kelvin-Sense package, a variant of the widely used TO-247 package. The new package addresses the demand for high power density and space savings in applications requiring high efficiency. By combining the TRENCHSTOP™ 5 IGBT and Rapid diode technology in an innovative TO-247 4-pin package, Infineon has achieved efficiency levels that were previously impossible. Applications such as Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), data centers and telecom equipment with PFC and inverter stage switching up to 20 kHz and above are targeted for this new package.

The Kelvin-Sense connection in the 4-pin configuration allows a significant reduction in the emitter inductance of the gate drive loop. Providing an additional pin for the IGBT emitter can be used as a reference potential for the driver. The 4-pin variant enables customers to increase switching frequency, thereby improving power density and reducing system costs. Compared to a standard TO-247 3-pin version with TRENCHSTOP 5 IGBT and Rapid diode technology, the new package achieves 20 percent lower turn-off losses and 15 percent lower turn-on losses. This results in an overall switching loss reduction of around 20 percent, leading to excellent efficiency.

As an example, customers who have adopted this TO-247 4-pin package for their EU ENERGY STAR® certified UPS have proven that they can double their power density while also significantly improving efficiency. This allows for more compact high-power compatible UPS units, which reduces the building space required to house the UPS system, reduces cooling requirements, and reduces overall system costs. According to ENERGY STAR, ENERGY STAR certified UPSs can reduce energy losses by 30 to 50 percent. This new package makes it much easier for designers to achieve efficiency goals.

The new TO-247 4-pin discrete IGBT devices are sampling now. Customers can choose between the Rapid 1, optimized for low forward voltage (VF) with integrated freewheeling diode, or the Rapid 2 with low reverse recovery charge (QRR). A demo board is also available for convenient comparison of the TO-247 3-pin and TO-247 4-pin packages.
