November 27, 2014 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak, www.linear.com ) announced the release of the LT3790, a synchronous buck-boost DC/DC controller that delivers up to 250W of power with a single IC. The product's input voltage range of 4.7V to 60V is ideal for a wide range of automotive and industrial applications. The output voltage can be set from 0V to 60V, making it suitable for voltage regulators or battery/supercapacitor chargers. The LT3790's internal four-switch buck-boost controller operates at input voltages that are higher, lower, or equal to the output voltage. This makes it ideal for applications such as automotive, where input voltages can fluctuate rapidly during stop/start, cold crank, and load dump scenarios. The transition between buck, pass-through, and boost operating modes is seamless, providing a well-regulated output despite wide variations in power supply voltage. The proprietary design of the LT3790 utilizes three control loops capable of monitoring input current, output current, and output voltage to provide optimal performance and reliability.

The LT3790 utilizes four external switching MOSFETs and can deliver up to 250W of continuous output power with a maximum efficiency of 98.5%. +6% output current precision ensures precise output regulation, while +2% output voltage precision provides precise output voltage, making it ideal for charging applications. Multiple LT3790s can be easily parallelized for higher power requirements. Furthermore, the switching frequency can be programmed between 200kHz and 700kHz or synchronized with an external clock. Additional features include output cutoff, input and output current monitoring, C/10 charge termination, and integrated fault protection.

The LT3790EFE is available in a 38-pin thermally enhanced TSSOP package and starts at $4.75 in 1,000-unit quantities. The extended temperature version, the Grade I LT3790IFE, is also currently available and is offered at $5.25 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities. The high temperature version, Grade H LT3790HFE, is available at $5.50 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities. The extended temperature version, Grade MP LT3790MPFE, is currently available and is offered at $14.75 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities. All versions are available immediately.
