Micrel's ultra-compact, high-density synchronous boost converter providing up to 10W output power
November 24, 2014 — Micrel Korea (CEO Young Jun Oh, www.micrel.com), a leading provider of high-performance linear and power solutions as well as LAN, timing and communication solutions, announced that it is supplying two types of 2MHz boost converters, MIC2875/MIC2876, with maximum 2A output performance that require only three ultra-compact external components and occupy a board space of only 122mm². These ultra-compact, high-efficiency (up to 95%) regulators are ideal for operation with single-cell lithium-ion batteries or for powering applications such as USB OTG (On-The-Go) and HDMI hosts, tablets, and smartphones. These devices provide TLE (True Load Disconnect) to prevent current flow between input and output when the regulator fails. Additionally, this solution supports bypass mode operation when the input voltage exceeds the output voltage setting, and under light load conditions, the device reduces the switching frequency to extend battery life. The MIC2875/MIC2876 are supplied at prices of $0.55 and $0.52 per unit, respectively, based on production quantities of 1,000 units. Samples can also be ordered online.

The anti-ringing switch minimizes EMI issues in discontinuous mode. Additionally, the MIC2876 features the capability to reduce the switching frequency to as low as 45kHz during light load operation to optimize boost regulator performance to meet low-noise requirements for audio applications.

The MIC2875/MIC2876 can utilize fixed output voltages of 4.75V, 5.0V, 5.25V, 5.5V or selectable adjustable output voltage. These components provide complete protection under overcurrent and thermal conditions. The device features a junction temperature range from -40ºC to +125ºC.
