Receiver and transmitter for efficiently charging 1-cell and 2-cell battery-powered applications

TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) November 21, 2014 – Developers designing industrial, medical, and personal electronics devices want to eliminate all connectivity and charge their products faster and more efficiently. To meet these demands, TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the launch of the industry's first highly integrated 10W wireless charging receiver and transmitter, an efficient solution. The bq51025 and bq500215 are currently in mass production and enable waterproof and dustproof portable device designs, as well as faster and lower-temperature charging of 1-cell and 2-cell (1S and 2S) lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, these charging solutions are compatible with existing 5W Qi-compliant products on the market, allowing consumers to charge in a wider variety of locations than before. TI demonstrated this new 10W wireless charging solution at the Wireless Power Summit exhibition held in Berkeley, California from November 19 to 20.

Efficient wireless charging possible at 10W

The bq51025 receiver supports programmable output voltages from 4.5V to 10V and significantly improves thermal performance by achieving a charging efficiency of up to 84% at 10W when paired with the bq500215 wireless power transmitter. With a size of only 3.60mm x 2.89mm, this fully integrated wireless power receiver solution can be adopted in the design of various types of industrial portable equipment, ranging from point-of-sale (POS) scanners to portable medical diagnostic equipment and personal electronic devices such as tablets and ultrabooks.

The bq500215 is a dedicated fixed-frequency 10W wireless power digital controller transmitter that is compatible with 5W Qi receivers. This transmitter product applies an enhanced foreign object detection technique to identify foreign objects before power transmission and can actively reduce power if excessive loss is detected.

Key features of bq51025/bq500215:

· When combined with the bq500215 controller, the fast charging receiver achieves a system efficiency of up to 84% at 10W, enabling faster charging of 1-cell and 2-cell battery-powered electronic devices.

· By supporting Qi standard communication and control functions, it is compatible with any WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) Qi standard transmitter or receiver up to 5W. In addition, the I2C communication interface of this wireless charging solution allows for easier alignment of the receiver on the surface of the transmitter and enables the transmission of unique data packets between the receiver and the transmitter.

· These two devices are compatible with future medium-power Qi standard transmitters and receivers.

Wireless Power Evaluation Module

· The operation and performance of the bq51025 can be evaluated using the bq51025EVM-649 wireless power receiver evaluation kit.

· The bq500215EVM-648 wireless power transmitter evaluation module provides all basic functions of a Qi standard wireless charging pad. By using a single-coil transmitter with a 12V input, developers can reduce design time.

Supply and Price

The bq51025 receiver and bq500215 transmitter are currently in mass production supply. The bq51025 is available in a 42-ball 3.6mm x 2.9mm x 0.5mm chip-scale package, and the bq500215 is available in a 9mm x 9mm package. The recommended retail price for both products is $4 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities.
