Linear Technology Launches Ultra-Thin 1.8mm, 3A µModule Regulator in 6.25mm x 6.25mm LGA Package

December 2, 2014 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-gwak) announced the launch of the LTM4623, a 3A µModule (micro-module) step-down regulator offered in an ultra-thin 1.8mm profile LGA package requiring only a 6.25mm x 6.25mm footprint. The package height using solder paste is less than 2mm, complying with height specifications for numerous PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express), Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMC) for AdvancedTCA carrier cards in embedded computing applications. The compact, low-profile LTM4623 can be mounted on the backside of the PCB and does not restrict top-side space for components such as memory and FPGAs. The LTM4623 operates from 4V to 20V input power and precisely regulates output voltage from 0.6V to 5.5V with a maximum DC output voltage error of 1.5%. Application examples include ultra-high-density data storage, gateway controllers, and 40Gbps to 100Gbps network equipment.
The LTM4623 solution fits within 0.5cm² on a dual-side PCB or within 1cm² on a single-side PCB. The circuit requires only one input capacitor and one output capacitor, a resistor to set VOUT, and a small capacitor for VOUT tracking and soft start. With auxiliary 5V bias, the LTM4623 operates at input voltages as low as 2.375V. At 3A, the operating efficiency converting 12VIN to 1.5VOUT and 3.3VOUT is 80% and 88%, respectively. At 12VIN to 1.5VOUT, power dissipation is 1.1W, resulting in only a 24°C rise in junction temperature. The LTM4623 is guaranteed to operate from –40°C to 125°C.
