December 2, 2014, Seoul - Infineon Technologies (Korea CEO Lee Seung-soo) has expanded its discrete IGBT product portfolio for high-power applications with the launch of a new TO-247PLUS package. This new package features the same footprint and pinout as the JEDEC standard TO-247-3, while enabling maximum 120A IGBTs and maximum rated diodes in a single package. TO-247PLUS package products are suitable for industrial applications such as UPS (uninterruptible power supplies), welding machines, photovoltaics, and industrial drives, as well as automotive applications such as powertrain inverters. By upgrading existing designs to higher power output or improving thermal conditions, system reliability and lifetime can be enhanced. The higher current capacity of TO-247PLUS reduces the number of devices required in parallel configurations, enabling even more compact designs.

This new package is designed to be mounted on heat sinks using clips or press-fit mounting. The advantages of this mounting method include even pressure distribution across the package, improved thermal conductivity, and guaranteed higher mechanical stability against strong vibrations and mechanical impact.

The TO-247PLUS package eliminates mounting holes, allowing it to accommodate 70 percent more silicon die area compared to standard TO-247. Additionally, the thermal pad area is 26 percent larger, achieving 20 percent lower thermal resistance Rth(jh) compared to standard TO-247. The TO-247PLUS package body employs a special "plastic trouser" design, which extends the creepage distance to 4.25mm. This is 2mm longer than TO-247-3. The special plastic body compound of the TO-247PLUS package better withstands clip pressure, and the new bond wiring method enables DC collector current to be increased from 80A to 160A, allowing higher reliability and longer lifetime of the IGBT.
