Linear Technology, surge stopper solution compliant with MIL-STD-1275D standard
December 10, 2014 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-gwak) announced the launch of a surge stopper solution compliant with MIL-STD-1275D military standard as defined by the U.S. Department of Defense. The product is demonstrated with evaluation board DC2150A. MIL-STD-1275D is a military standard established by the U.S. Department of Defense that specifies steady-state and transient voltage characteristics for 28V DC power supplies in military vehicles. When faced with the stringent surges, spikes, and ripple waveforms specified in MIL-STD-1275D, the DC2150A limits the output voltage to a safe 44V. For most applications, meeting the standard is as simple as positioning the DC2150A circuit in front of devices that can withstand 44V. The DC2150A utilizes surge stopper ICs LTC4366 and LT4363 to control a series N-channel MOSFET, reducing solution size and cost compared to conventional shunt circuits utilizing bulky capacitors, fuses, inductors, and transient voltage suppressors.
The DC2150A is designed to withstand input transients up to ±250V and deliver a minimum of 4A current to the load under all conditions except ±7V ripple conditions, during which the available current is reduced to 2.8A. N-channel MOSFET products are protected against output overload conditions up to current limiting. Consistent overvoltage or overcurrent conditions shut down the circuit after a timer delay, and the circuit automatically turns back on after a cooldown cycle. A thermal protection circuit turns off the MOSFET controlled by LT4363 when temperature exceeds 105°C.
The DC2150A offers four assembly options (DC2150A-A through DC2150A-D) based on performance in handling maximum load current and long 100V peak surges of 500ms duration. BOM (Bill of materials) cost is reduced according to board options that eliminate unnecessary protection features. The DC2150A-C, the only option with all features, has been released to market and is priced at $150 each.
