Freescale Announces Industry's First 15W Qi-Compatible Wireless Charging Solution

December 15, 2014, Seoul, Korea – Freescale Semiconductor (www.freescale.co.kr, CEO Hwang Yeon-ho, Korea) announced the industry's first 15W Qi-compatible wireless charging solution, expanding its wireless charging portfolio and taking another step toward the wireless Internet of Tomorrow. This solution serves as the foundation for ultra-fast wireless recharging for a variety of relatively large mobile devices such as tablets, large-screen smartphones, and portable industrial and medical equipment.
Delivering three times the power of typical 5W solutions, Freescale's 15W wireless products enable efficient charging of relatively large-sized devices with high-capacity batteries and faster charging of small-sized devices through this high power capability. For example, charging a typical tablet equipped with a 4000mAh battery through a standard USB port normally takes more than 8 hours, but the Freescale 15W solution reduces this charging time to several hours.
Freescale's new 15W portfolio includes transmitter and receiver ICs and flexible implementation technologies that complement them, enabling rapid development of wireless charging systems. Additionally, this new solution supports multiple major industry standards including WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) and PMA (Power Matters Alliance).
Denis Cabrol, Global Marketing and Business Development Director, Freescale MCU Group, stated, "Modern mobile products offer a wider range of features and specifications compared to the past, so wireless charging system developers must provide larger battery capacity and higher recharging speeds." He added, "Freescale's industry-first 15W solution is designed to meet these new market requirements while improving product development efficiency and promoting design creativity."
The solution features two 15W ICs: the WPR1516 receiver chip and MWCT1012 transmitter chip. Developers can rapidly produce products using firmware libraries that provide core functionality needed to implement advanced wireless charging systems. Advanced application programming interfaces are also included, allowing developers to modify or adjust library functions, add customized application code, and create finely tuned, differentiated end products.
Comprehensive Development Support
Freescale's latest total system solution includes production-ready reference designs and evaluation boards optimized for performance and fast time-to-market. Freescale offers WPR1500-LDO and WPR1500-BUCK as two evaluation board options for different output topologies to support the WPR1516 receiver IC. The MWCT1012 transmitter controller IC is supported by the WCT-15W1COILTX reference design.
