TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) December 12, 2014 – TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the expansion of its motor driver portfolio with the launch of a new family of 12V motor drivers that reduces spin-up times to just seconds and makes tuning stepper and brushed DC motors easier than ever. The DRV8846 enables precise, smooth, and quiet operation by utilizing TI's new proprietary Adaptive Current Control technology, which automatically tunes motor performance. The DRV8848 simplifies design by using a simple Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control interface and minimal external components.
Both devices are fully protected from fault conditions, reducing design complexity and increasing system reliability in motor applications such as 3D printers, IP security cameras, refrigerator damper control, HVAC, home automation devices, and robotic vacuum cleaners (for more details and sample orders, see www.ti.com/drv8846-pr-kr ).
Key Features and Benefits of DRV8846 and DRV8848
· No tuning effort required: The adaptive current regulation provided in the DRV8846 dynamically changes the current regulation structure according to load conditions, eliminating the need for separate configuration. This simplifies system-level tuning and debugging, enabling finished product manufacturers to launch products faster.
· Smooth and Quiet Operation: The DRV8846's 1/32 microstepping indexer, combined with adaptive current regulation, minimizes current ripple, providing a smooth and precise operation profile and reducing audible noise.
· High Integration: The DRV8848 can operate without a current sensing resistor, requiring only a power decoupling capacitor as the sole external component for operation. Including a resistor enables more precise motor operation and allows for on-chip current regulation.
· Comprehensive Fault Protection: Protects both the motor driver and motor with advanced on-chip protection, including overcurrent protection, thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, and diagnostics with fault condition feedback, reducing design complexity and increasing system reliability.
TI Designs Reference Design
Time-to-market can be accelerated by utilizing two types of fully tested new TI Designs reference designs. The 3D printer reference design is a complete 3-axis, single-compression molding system that precisely drives four stepper motors from a single 12V power supply using the DRV8846's adaptive current regulation. The refrigerator damper and fan motor control design utilizes the DRV8848's built-in motor driver to provide airflow and direction control inside the refrigerator on a single-layer PCB design.
