TI Achieves ASIL D and SIL 3 Certifications for ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 'Functional Safety' Standards with Hercules™ MCUs
- An MCU that meets stringent 'functional safety' standards, certified by Germany's TÜV SÜD, for use in automotive, industrial, and general-purpose 'functional safety' applications.
- New LaunchPad development kit enables convenient development using certified MCUs
TI Korea (CEO Kent Chon, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) December 17, 2014 – As automotive and industrial systems become increasingly sophisticated, it is becoming more challenging for automotive manufacturers to achieve 'functional safety' with their own systems. To meet these demands, TI (CEO Kent Chon) announced the launch of its Hercules™ TMS570LS12x/11x and RM46x microcontrollers (MCUs). These new products have been certified by TÜV SÜD in Germany to meet the relevant requirements of ISO 26262:2011 and IEC 61508:2010 'functional safety' standards, achieving safety integrity levels of ASIL D and SIL 3. This allows manufacturers to significantly reduce the time and effort required to obtain certification for their products. TI has also released two new LaunchPad development kits, which are low-cost, entry-level tools that can be conveniently used by developers who want to evaluate the 'functional safety' features and performance of certified MCUs.
TI's Certified MCU
Based on SafeTI™ hardware development process certification and a successful review of the Hercules MCU platform architecture concept, the Hercules TMS570LS12x/11x MCUs have been certified to meet the requirements for safety integrity levels ranging from ISO 26262:2011 and IEC 61508:2010 ASIL D and SIL 3. These MCUs are suitable for 'functional safety' applications in the automotive and transportation sectors and provide frequencies up to 180 MHz. The automotive-certified TMS570LS12x/11x MCUs offer a variety of performance, memory capacities, and peripheral options, allowing for selection to suit the specific needs of the system.
The high-performance Hercules RM46x MCU is certified to meet the requirements for SIL 3 safety integrity of IEC 61508:2010. This MCU is suitable for industrial and general-purpose 'functional safety' applications and provides frequencies up to 220 MHz. The RM46x MCU also offers various levels of performance and memory configurations, as well as features for motor control.
The Hercules MCU can detect and handle runtime errors by integrating high-level diagnostic functions. Additionally, it can construct “safe islands” to perform safety-related processing with minimal separate CPU load. Diagnostic features include lockstep behavior for dual ARM® Cortex®-R4 floating-point CPUs, CPU and SRAM built-in self-test (BIST), and transaction-based error correction code (ECC) for flash and RAM interfaces. The ECC function automatically corrects single-bit errors and detects dual-bit errors.
Hercules Launchpad Development Kit
The release of two new LaunchPad development kits enables developers to conveniently evaluate TÜV SÜD-certified Hercules TMS570LS12x/11x and RM46x MCUs. These modular, quick-launch development tools include a development board, USB cable, and quick start guide, allowing for immediate evaluation. They also include onboard emulation and Hercules MCU 'functional safety' demos, making it convenient to test the latest 'functional safety' features being integrated into Hercules MCUs. These LaunchPad kits allow developers to download HALCoGen software, a GUI-based code writing tool, to shorten code development time with Hercules MCUs, and support TI's latest version of the Eclipse-based Code Composer Studio™ integrated development environment (IDE).

SafeTI Design Package
The TMS570LS12x/11x and RM46x MCUs are products included in the SafeTI design package for use in 'functional safety'. The SafeTI design package provides functional safety-related documentation, support forums, tools, and software, enabling customers to more easily achieve functional safety standards and accelerate time-to-market with their functional safety systems.
Price and Supply Timing
The Hercules TMS570LS12x/11x and RM46x MCUs have obtained TÜV SÜD certification and are ready for immediate mass production and adoption in current customers' 'functional safety' applications. The Hercules TMS570LS12x/11x and RM46x MCUs start at less than $10 per unit for quantities of 10,000.
The Hercules TMS570LS12x/11x Launchpad (LAUNCHXL-TMS57012) and RM46x Launchpad (LAUNCHXL-RM46) can be purchased at the TI store for a low cost of $19.99. Developers can use the new Launchpad to gain a thorough understanding of the Hercules TMS570LS12x/11x and RM46x MCUs, and then proceed to the next step using various other Hercules MCU tools.
