February 27, 2015 – CSR (http://www.csr.com), a global provider of innovative semiconductor ICs and software solutions for location awareness, multimedia, and cloud connectivity, announced the launch of the BlueCore® CSRB5348 dual-mode System-On-Chip (SoC).
This new Bluetooth® Smart-enabled platform is a versatile and cost-effective solution suitable for next-generation embedded systems and modules. In particular, through a configurable SoC that allows for various configurations depending on the application and support for Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart Ready, it can be utilized in numerous emerging types of the Internet of Things (IoT).
The industrial-grade SoC in the BlueCore® CSRB534x series supports an 80MHz RISC MCU, a 40MHz DSP, USB charging capabilities, and a large number of digital/analog I/O pins. Thanks to this highly integrated package, not only is the Bill of Materials (BOM) significantly reduced, but it also offers excellent design flexibility. Based on this flexibility, the CSRB5348 chipset package can be widely used in industrial automation, home automation, EPOS, data logging systems, barcode readers, various measuring devices, and products requiring a large number of IO interfaces, such as keyboards.

Highly integrated cost-effective development
By integrating the microcontroller, USB charging capabilities, and a significant portion of analog and power management into a single platform, the CSRB5348 enables substantial savings in both Bill of Materials (BOM) and space. Additionally, the platform offers the advantage of easily and cost-effectively implementing dual-mode Bluetooth functionality.
Optimal battery life, low power
The CSRB5348 supports Bluetooth Smart v4.1 and enables long battery life when applied to products that typically require low power characteristics, such as keyboards. Because the development platform manages the baseband very efficiently, it provides optimized performance with minimal development effort while minimizing power consumption.
A large number of I/Os providing design flexibility
The new platform supports 22 digital I/Os and another 22 analog I/Os configurable for various purposes to ensure design flexibility. Additionally, it includes built-in ROM and RAM as standard, offers a serial flash memory interface as an option for memory expansion, and provides USB battery charging capabilities for lithium batteries. This provides an environment that guarantees design flexibility regardless of whether the manufacturer is developing medical equipment, stylus pens, or industrial automation solutions.
Development kit that accelerates the development schedule
Along with the chipset package itself, CSR has released a dedicated Software Development Kit (SDK) for the CSRB534x series to enable developers to bring new products to market quickly. The new CSRB534x allows for rapid feature implementation and testing using the released dedicated development board. The CSRB534x SDK greatly assists developers in experiencing the new platform and accelerating the development of various wireless devices. It supports various forms of data transmission through support for Bluetooth SPP and Bluetooth Smart GATT profiles, and includes HID over GATT for keyboards or game controllers. The SDK includes an MFi® V4.0 Add-on for Apple products, as well as support for Android and PC.
The CSRB5348 development kit will be available for purchase at CSR distributors in March 2015, starting at $249 (excluding VAT and air freight).
