March 18, 2015 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the launch of a new product (LTC4412), a high-reliability, military-grade temperature version of the rugged “ideal diode” PowerPath™ controller. The LTC4412 enables low-loss ORing of multiple input DC power supplies. Its 20mV forward voltage is at least 10 times lower than the forward voltage of a Schottky diode. As a result, this device improves efficiency by order of magnitude by providing significantly lower power loss and less self-heating in systems requiring automatic switching or load sharing between power sources. The LTC4412 meets performance specifications across a wide range of operating conditions, including an operating voltage range of 2.5V to 28V and an operating junction temperature range of up to –55°C to 150°C.

The LTC4412 also provides reverse battery and MOSFET protection circuitry in a compact SOT package. This device offers digital control inputs and open-drain status output pins, simplifying the interface with microcontrollers. Applications include systems typically powered by various input sources, such as high-current PowerPath switches, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), backup battery systems, logic-controlled power switches, and automotive and industrial systems.

Multiple LTC4412 devices can be used to realize switchover between multiple batteries or to implement charging of multiple batteries with a single charger. The STAT (status pin) of the LTC4412 can be used to control the secondary P-channel MOSFET power switch, and both Schottky diodes can be removed from the diode OR circuit. The ultra-low 11μA standby current of this device is independent of the load current.

The LTC4412 is available in a low-profile SOT-23 package. Classes E and I operate over an operating junction temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, the high-reliability Class H operates over -40°C to +150°C, and the military MP class operates over an operating junction temperature range of -55°C to +150°C. The device is available immediately and is priced at $1.85 per unit for the Class H and $2.65 per unit for the MP class in 1,000-unit quantities.
