Amidst prolonged global energy supply instability, the domestic semiconductor industry is launching voluntary energy-saving initiatives in line with the government's energy conservation policies. This move signifies a responsible response as a core national industry, in response to growing uncertainty regarding energy supply and demand stemming from factors such as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The Korea Semiconductor Industry Association announced in a statement released on the 8th that it would gradually expand practical measures to reduce energy consumption across the industry.

The association explained, “Amidst growing uncertainty in global energy supply and demand, we sympathize with the government’s request to practice energy conservation and express our commitment to active participation at the industry level.”

First, the plan is to distribute power usage during peak hours through the flexibility of work schedules.

By actively utilizing staggered work hours and flexible work arrangements, we simultaneously reduce traffic congestion and energy consumption, and suppress unnecessary power usage by minimizing office lighting during lunchtime or after work.

Campaigns to encourage the use of public transportation and reduce private car usage are also being carried out in parallel.

Energy efficiency improvements are also being promoted at production sites and research facilities. The plan is to systematically manage power consumption through measures such as cutting off standby power, optimizing process operations, and improving equipment efficiency.

Each company plans to identify additional cost-saving measures by considering the characteristics of their workplaces and process conditions, and in the mid-to-long term, will continue with facility investments and operational innovations to enhance energy efficiency.

The association emphasized the industry's continued cooperation, stating, "Going forward, the semiconductor industry will actively work to spread a culture of energy conservation based on voluntary participation to respond to national crises."

This measure is regarded as a strategic choice aimed at maintaining industrial competitiveness and laying the foundation for sustainable growth amidst the energy crisis, going beyond short-term cost reductions. Attention is now focused on whether this move by the semiconductor industry will spread to other sectors.
