Cloudflare has introduced 'Cloudflare Mesh,' a new private networking product designed to enhance connection security required for operating artificial intelligence (AI) agents.

Cloudflare announced on the 16th that 'Cloudflare Mesh' will serve as a foundation to support the building, deployment, and operation of next-generation AI applications by integrating AI agents, users, and multi-cloud infrastructure into a single security fabric.

The background behind Cloudflare's release of this product lies in a change in the way AI is utilized.

As AI moves beyond simple experiments into actual service environments, there is an increasing number of instances where agents need to access sensitive resources, such as internal databases, private APIs, and staging environments.

However, the company explained that existing VPNs or manual tunnel methods have significant limitations in terms of speed and operational efficiency, and carry the risk of exposing internal assets to the outside if incorrectly configured.

Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, pointed out that while AI agents are becoming the standard for developer workflows, the network architecture supporting them is still designed to be human-centric.

He said that developers have been making the risky choice of wasting time on complex VPN operations or, conversely, exposing their internal infrastructure to the public network, and that Messi acts as a security bridge to reduce these trade-offs.

Cloudflare presented a structure that encompasses the entire process of AI agents by integrating its developer platform with Mesh.

According to the official announcement, Workers, Workers VPC, and Agents SDK are integrated with this product, allowing developers to connect laptops, office equipment, and multi-cloud environments such as AWS and GCP into a single private fabric.

In addition, private IP traffic is transmitted in an encrypted state through Cloudflare's global network, and AI agents running on Workers can access the private network through Workers VPC bindings.

The company stated that this allows scope-based access permissions to private APIs and databases to be granted with just simple code configuration.

The industry anticipates that as AI agents are deployed in actual operations, network security and permission management will emerge as key challenges. With the launch of this mesh, Cloudflare aims to provide a foundation for AI applications to operate more securely, overcoming the limitations of human-centric networks.
