April 14, 2015 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-gwak) announced the launch of the LT3952, a current mode step-up DC/DC converter with an integrated 60V, 4A DMOS power switch. This product is specifically designed to drive high-power LEDs in multiple configurations. The product combines input and output current regulation loops with output voltage regulation to operate as a highly flexible current/voltage source. The LT3952's input voltage range of 3V to 42V makes it suitable for use in a wide variety of applications including automotive, industrial, and architectural lighting.

The LT3952 can drive up to 16 white LEDs at 350mA with a 12V nominal input and delivers over 15 watts. This product integrates high-side current sensing and can be used in boost mode, buck mode, buck-boost mode, or SEPIC topology. The integrated spread spectrum frequency modulation minimizes EMI issues. The LT3952 provides efficiency of over 94% in boost topology, eliminating the need for external heat sinks, and the integrated LED short-circuit protection feature enables increased reliability required by most applications. The frequency adjustment pin allows users to program the switching frequency in the range of 200kHz to 3MHz. The LT3952 provides efficiency over 90% while enabling switching at 2MHz with a compact solution footprint. The LT3952 offers a very compact high-power LED driver solution in a TSSOP-28E package with improved thermal performance.

The LT3952 includes a gate driver for PMOS LED discontinuous switches and provides a dimming ratio of up to 4,000:1 using external PWM signals. For applications with less stringent dimming requirements, the CTRL pin can be used to provide a 10:1 analog dimming range, and the internal PWM generator can be used for 5:1 dimming. The LT3952's fixed frequency, current mode architecture provides stable operation across a wide range of supply and output voltages. Output short-circuit protection and open LED protection features improve system reliability. Other features include frequency synchronization, spread spectrum frequency modulation, programmable VIN under-voltage and over-voltage protection, input current limiting and monitoring.

The LT3952EFE is available in a 28-pin TSSOP package with enhanced thermal performance. This product is available in three temperature grades, operating at extended and industrial grades of –40°C to 125°C (junction) and high temperature grade of –40°C to 150°C.
