May 13, 2015 – Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-gwak) announced the launch of the LT8616, a high-efficiency dual synchronous monolithic step-down switching regulator capable of 42V input. The dual-channel design delivers independent continuous currents of 2.5A and 1.5A down to a low output of 0.8V. The dual-channel synchronous rectification topology provides up to 95% efficiency, while Burst Mode® operation maintains standby current at 6.5μA (both channels possible) at no-load quiescent state, making it ideal for always-on systems. Switching frequency can be programmed between 200kHz and 3MHz and can be synchronized across this entire frequency range.

The LT8616's minimum 35ns on-time enables 16VIN to 1.8VOUT step-down conversion, while switching at 2MHz allows designers to avoid frequency bands sensitive to noise like AM radio, enabling a very compact solution footprint. The 3.4V to 42V input voltage range is ideal for automotive applications that must operate through cold crank and stop-start scenarios with a minimum input voltage as low as 3.4V. Each channel of the LT8616 maintains a minimum dropout voltage of only 400mΩ (at 1A) under all conditions, enabling superior performance in scenarios such as automotive cold crank. The LT8616's 28-pin thermally enhanced TSSOP package and high switching frequency keep external inductors and capacitors small, providing a compact and thermally efficient footprint.

The LT8616 utilizes dual internal high-efficiency top and bottom power switches with essential boost diode, oscillator, control and logic circuits integrated on a single die. Each channel shifts 180° out of phase to reduce output ripple. Each channel features individual inputs for added design flexibility. Low-ripple Burst Mode operation maintains high efficiency at low output current while keeping output ripple as low as 15mVP-P. Proprietary design techniques and new high-speed process technology achieve high efficiency across a wide input voltage range, while the LT8616's current-mode topology provides fast transient response and excellent loop stability. Additional features include internal compensation, power good flag, output soft start/tracking, and thermal protection.

The LT8616 is available in a thermally enhanced 28-pin TSSOP package. It is available in three temperature grades: operating from –40°C to 125°C (junction) for extended (E) and industrial (I) grades, and –40°C to 150°C for the high-temperature grade.
