Broadcom, a global semiconductor company specializing in wired and wireless communications, recently announced the BCM4359, a 5G WiFi 2x2 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) combo chip that supports RSDB (Real Simultaneous Dual Band) functionality in mobile devices.

The BCM4359 chip is "a product that clearly demonstrates Broadcom's leadership in high-performance MIMO technology," according to David L. Recker, Senior Director of the Embedded Wireless Communications Division at Broadcom's WCC (Wireless Connectivity Combo) group.

The RSDB functionality of the BCM4359 allows simultaneous connectivity to both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands, and provides increased data throughput and reduced latency even when multiple applications are in use.

The ability to receive and transmit signals across both bands provides enhanced multitasking experience for users who prioritize connectivity.

These advantages are particularly evident during video streaming or gaming. "The RSDB functionality enables users to share content with others while remaining connected to the network," explained David Recker.

The frequency bandwidth of the BCM4359 is optimized to 867 Mbps PHY speed in 2-stream MIMO mode, and can rapidly switch to RSDB mode for applications requiring multi-band connectivity.

Additionally, the Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) functionality supported by the BCM4359 enables the use of additional channels, providing faster speeds while significantly reducing connection failures. Broadcom's Narrow Band technology extends the connectivity range between devices by up to 2 times.

When used together with the recently announced BCM4366 4x4 MU MIMO chip for routers, the BCM4359 provides an end-to-end solution with all the benefits of next-generation MU MIMO technology.

Broadcom also announced the BCM43455, a highly integrated, cost-effective 1x1 5G WiFi combo chip for budget smartphones. This product delivers 5G WiFi performance and functionality while reducing component costs by up to 50%.

5G WiFi MIMO infrastructure is already in place, with over 90% of all current WiFi utilizing MIMO, which Broadcom also supports.

"As WiFi and Bluetooth technologies advance and are incorporated into more devices, user expectations for 'connectivity' continue to grow. Through the 5G WiFi MIMO combo architecture, smartphones and tablets can simultaneously operate within multiple frequency spectra, ensuring superior connectivity and delivering the best user experience," said David Recker.

The BCM4359 is currently in the sampling phase, with mass production scheduled for the second half of this year, according to David Recker.
