Cypress Announces Breakthrough Features for TrueTouch™ Controllers
- Provides the advantages of a capacitive touchscreen at the cost of a resistive touchscreen!

Cypress Korea (Country Manager Young-do Lim, www.cypress.com ) announced groundbreaking features for the Cypress TrueTouch touchscreen controller that enable manufacturers of mobile phones, cameras, GPS systems, and mobile systems to provide the advantages of capacitive touchscreens at the cost of resistive touchscreens.

New features available in Cypress’s CY8CTST241 (single-touch with one-finger gestures) and CY8CTST242 (addition of limited two-finger gestures such as “pinch” and “zoom”) deliver the accuracy and responsiveness of a high-performance touchscreen with a true single-layer sensor panel while significantly reducing the cost of the touchscreen’s most expensive components.

Capacitive touchscreens are increasingly being recognized by buyers of new mobile devices as a differentiating factor. Compared to resistive touchscreens, the advantages of capacitive touchscreens include a more intuitive user experience, better transmittance, lower power consumption, and improved reliability and durability.

Many inexpensive “feature phones” currently do not offer capacitive touchscreens due to cost. The new TrueTouch single-layer sensor is opening up new “feature phone” and low-cost smartphone markets for capacitive touchscreens, particularly in major markets such as China and India.

Conventional capacitive touchscreens use two-layer sensors to deliver the accuracy and linearity required for today's user experience. Cypress has developed a proprietary algorithm that interfaces with a true single-layer, bridge-free sensor to deliver two-layer performance for an excellent combination of user experience and cost sensitivity.

By eliminating this second sensor layer, mobile device manufacturers can reduce sensor costs by more than 30%, and it is currently available for use in glass and film. With just a single sensor layer, the TrueTouch solution delivers accuracy better than 1.25 mm, an excellent signal-to-noise ratio, a fast response time (80 Hz), and a maximum level of 3.6 mW of active power.
