June 10, 2015, Seoul, Korea — Freescale Semiconductor (www.freescale.co.kr, CEO Yeonho Hwang) shipped its one billionth copper wiring component just two years after launching an ambitious strategy to expand and promote the use of copper wiring assembly technology across the industry.

Freescale’s final manufacturing facilities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Tianjin, China, currently produce more copper wiring bonding with superior technology and excellent quality than traditional gold wiring. Freescale expects that by the end of 2015, most products manufactured at these two sites will use copper wiring bonding.

To date, over 300 million Freescale products have been shipped for automotive applications, a significant portion of which are used in complex internal systems. Starting with an automotive event hosted in May 2013, Freescale has focused on accelerating the widespread adoption of copper wiring technology. This event, attended by Freescale's customers, suppliers, key distributors, and leading industry experts, facilitated discussions on comprehensive work plans and close collaboration, which served as a major driving force in Freescale shipping its one billionth copper wiring device in just 24 months.

Freescale's copper wiring packages provide higher stability and electrical and thermal performance compared to equivalent gold wiring packages. In addition, in terms of production quality, Freescale’s current copper wiring products are twice as high as existing gold wiring components, and the copper wiring defect rate is only about 20 per billion.

Furthermore, given the high internal production quality of copper and the greater number of wafer fabs qualified for copper compared to gold wiring, copper wiring helps improve customer supply stability in addition to its technical advantages. Customers utilizing the benefits provided by Freescale’s copper bonding technology span a wide range of industries and applications, from safety-sensitive solutions in the quality-strict automotive market to consumer electronics and high-performance networking equipment.
