ETRI and Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Begin Construction of Navigation Aid-Based Marine IoT Communication Network
Actual Sea Field Verification Completed with Maximum 35km Communication Distance
Full-scale construction of a nationwide marine IoT communication network that converts national navigation aid infrastructure into maritime Internet of Things (IoT) base stations to collect and transmit marine data in real time has commenced.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 5th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in June regarding 'Development of Navigation Aid-Based Marine IoT Wireless Communication System Technology.'
The two organizations will collaborate in five areas: marine IoT wireless communication technology development, actual sea field pilot network construction and operation, marine data utilization and service expansion, marine data standardization, and international standardization and industrialization.
ETRI previously validated the field applicability of related technologies through the Smart Navigation Aid On-Site Facility Advancement Project (2021-2025).
In actual sea conditions between Maludo and Janghang Port in Gunsan on the West Sea and between Baekya Island and Hwapho Port in Yeosu on the South Sea, they confirmed maximum communication distance of 35km and simultaneous connection performance of 30 terminals.
They verified a narrow-band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) communication network based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) international mobile telecommunications standardization in actual marine environments and secured the foundation for implementing wide-area marine communication services utilizing low-power, low-cost terminals.
The two organizations plan to first construct pilot networks in three regions including Busan, Masan, and Ulsan, and expand to a nationwide marine IoT communication network after 2030.
Once the communication network is completed, remote monitoring and control of approximately 5,800 nationwide navigation aids will be possible, and real-time collection of marine environment and weather information will also become feasible, ETRI explained.
This project is also an implementation project of the government national agenda 'Development of Marine IoT Communication System and Construction of Information Service Center.'
Lee Moon-shik, Director of ETRI's Stereoscopic Communication Research Institute, stated, "The combination of ETRI's ICT technological capabilities and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' on-site infrastructure will serve as an opportunity to accelerate Korea's marine digital transformation. We will continue to make efforts to secure core source technologies in the marine IoT field and lead global standards."
