Infineon, First Semiconductor Company to Supply “80 PLUS® Platinum” Compliant Computer Silver Box Reference Designs

April 21, 2011, Seoul — Infineon Technologies (Korea Representative Director Seung-soo Lee) has developed a commercial silver box reference design for PC and server power supplies that enables significant reductions in raw material costs while achieving efficiency of up to 92.35%. Infineon’s new solution, the IFX90ATX300W, is based on three latest-generation ICs and meets “80 PLUS® Platinum,” the industry’s leading international energy efficiency standard. Efficiency represents the ratio of the amount of power actually used to the power applied. The difference between power input and power output is power loss, which is converted into heat. Therefore, higher efficiency reduces power consumption, thereby lowering electricity bills.

Infineon's new solutions have established a benchmark for the energy efficiency requirements of PC power supplies. The new solutions placed particular emphasis on reproducibility and reliability during mass production. The ICE3PCS01G, a third-generation CCM PFC (Continuous-Conduction Mode-Power-Factor-Control) IC, provides the highest efficiency currently available for PC power supply power ranges from 150W to 500W, along with the best cost-performance ratio for the PFC stage. Infineon's ICE2HS01G, a second-generation half-bridge driver IC, optimized the efficiency of LLC half-bridge converters providing synchronous rectification by optimizing the interaction between half-bridge driver operation and synchronous rectification functions to prevent unnecessary switching losses. In addition, Infineon’s ICE2QR2280Z, a quasi-resonant CoolSET™ that provides digital frequency reduction, minimizes switching losses of auxiliary power supplies that typically take the form of flyback converters, thereby achieving high efficiency, especially in low-load and standby modes.

Samples and demo boards of the entire chipset are currently being supplied to major customers, and each IC is being supplied for mass production.
