15A/25A SWIFT™ Step-Down Regulator Launched
Easy-to-use 25A converter incorporating NexFET™ technology,
Up to 5% more efficient than other products and capable of switching more than 1.5 times faster
TI Korea (CEO Jaejin Kim, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) April 5, 2011 – At the 2011 Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), TI unveiled two industry-leading, ultra-compact, highest-efficiency step-down regulators integrated with FETs capable of delivering up to 25A for telecom, networking, and other applications. (For more information, please refer to www.ti.com/tps56221-prkr )
The TPS56221 is an easy-to-use 25A, 14V, synchronous SWIFT switcher that integrates a NexFET MOSFET and achieves an efficiency of over 90% even at high loads with a 12V input and 1.3V output, providing a power density of over 200W/in³. Additionally, it can supply a continuous output current of up to 25A at a switching frequency of 500kHz. In addition, the new TPS56121 is a 15A, 14V synchronous switcher that provides more than 3% increase in efficiency at 5V input and 1.2V output and more than twice the switching frequency compared to existing products on the market.

"Onboard power supplies are typically designed alongside other circuits and therefore require excellent power density and power efficiency, especially for systems operating at high currents," said Sami Kiriaki, Senior Vice President of TI's Power Management business unit. "With these two new products, we are able to expand the SWIFT product family to higher-current applications. This enables customers to achieve even greater power density, efficiency, and thermal management, ultimately allowing them to implement more energy-efficient and reliable products."
The TPS56221 and TPS56121 are available in a thermally enhanced 5mm x 6mm QFN package, with a total solution size of 315mm², making them 30% smaller than other discrete solutions. Both devices are the first switcher products to incorporate TI's NexFET technology, providing enhanced thermal performance, protection, efficiency, and reliability. This switcher product allows for design flexibility by selecting from three frequencies of 300kHz, 500kHz, and 1MHz, and supports input voltages of 4.5V to 14V.
Key Features and Advantages of TPS56221 and TPS56121
• High Current Performance and Efficiency: Achieves over 90% efficiency at 25A and 15A peak load currents within an input voltage range of 4.5V to 14V.
• Compact and excellent power density: Minimizes footprint with a total solution size of 315 mm² and achieves a power density of over 200 W/in³.
NexFET Power Block – Multi-phase supports 50A, 100A, and above
In addition to the high current performance of the SWIFT converter, the CSD86350Q5D NexFET power block released by TI last year enables high-efficiency, multi-phase point-of-load (POL) designs with high current performance. This small 5mm x 6mm stacked MOSFET in a grounded leadframe SON package supports frequencies up to 1.5MHz, reduces thermal resistance, and simplifies the layout. The CSD86350Q5D achieves over 90% efficiency at 25A and, when combined with TI's TPS40140 stacked controller, supports multi-phase designs and is scalable to 50A, 100A, and beyond, maintaining high efficiency across the entire load.
