TI Korea (CEO Jaejin Kim, www.ti.com/ww/kr ) March 29, 2011 – Video security application developers can reduce the time required to develop highly differentiated video surveillance products that make customers feel safe and protected by up to 90%. TI announced two unique new reference designs that provide complete hardware and software solutions for application development, allowing customers to focus on differentiating video security solutions and launching them quickly during the design phase. These reference designs for Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) and Internet Protocol (IP) cameras are based on the recently announced TMS320DM81xx DaVinci digital media processor generation, a scalable single platform.
The DVR reference design supports various combinations of analog and IP cameras and maximizes the reuse of existing infrastructure, thereby avoiding the costs associated with replacing existing infrastructure and enabling support for analog cameras or providing hybrid DVR capabilities. Featuring over 32 real-time D1 channels and H.264 high-profile video processing performance, this DVR offers an H.264 compression rate more than 2.6 times higher than any other DVR on the market. Video traffic and data storage are optimized to minimize disk space usage while providing the same high-definition viewing experience for all stored videos. For example, customers can receive and store all video with the same quality even if they use a 350GB disk drive instead of a 1TB disk drive. The new DVR reference design is based on TI's TMS320DM8168 daVinci digital media processor, which operates at 1GHz. Because the DM8168 includes fixed-point and floating-point DSPs, it supports multi-channel analysis for continuous inspection of video inputs to detect incidents and respond automatically. Equipped with network capabilities for remote access, the reference design provides high-quality video, including HDMI output, and up to three independent displays.
The intelligent IP camera reference design enables the development of compact products, such as mini-domes, by providing up to 10-megapixel resolution at low frame rates with low power consumption. Multi-megapixel resolution reduces the number of cameras required to monitor large spaces, such as casinos, parking lots, and supermarkets. IP cameras are perfect for HD video surveillance, as they can capture even minute details, such as license plates and facial recognition, in dimly lit environments. Furthermore, the DM812x daVinci digital media processor provides video analytics capabilities through its proprietary DSP to deliver the intelligence intended for the cameras. This intelligence allows only what is necessary for recorded, streamed, and stored video sequences, enabling the development of more efficient video security systems that do not require manual monitoring year-round.
Flexible and cost-effective development activities
Both IP camera and DVR reference designs provide end-to-end video surveillance solutions based on the DM81xx daVinci Digital Media Platform, a single technology platform. This means that the solution can be easily integrated and scalable according to customer needs, and designed cost-effectively. By providing perfect software and processor core compatibility, both reference designs can support over 20 hardware derivatives, and hardware and software investments can be protected through reuse. Utilizing a single vendor provides a reliable support platform, and any support issues can be resolved by contacting TI alone. Unlike competing products that include vendor-specific licensed code, royalty-free Linux-based application source code supports the flexibility needed for product differentiation.
