Signing for the world's first 5G-based Olympics
Construction of a 1,400km wired communication network and a wireless communication network capable of accommodating 250,000 users

KT announced that it has signed a Telecommunications Supply Agreement (TSA) with the Organizing Committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

The Telecommunications Service Agreement (TSA) is an agreement that specifies detailed supply plans for telecommunications services to be provided by KT as the official telecommunications partner of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Following the signing of this agreement, KT will construct a wired network of approximately 1,400 km used for tournament communications, a wireless network capable of accommodating up to 250,000 users, as well as a broadcasting relay network, ICT infrastructure, and an integrated security center.

In particular, KT has established a Technology Operations Center (TOC) to support integrated monitoring across all ICT sectors and technical decision-making by the competition organizers, and is managing official Olympic web services and overall IT operations by operating a cloud-based data center for the first time in the history of the Olympics.

TOC stands for 'Technology Operations Center' and is responsible for the integrated monitoring and control of the competition's technology sector. Key decision-making is carried out through a cooperative framework with competition stakeholders. The monitoring targets include IT systems, communication equipment, and security equipment used for the operation of the Olympic Games; the KT Network Integrated Control Center is responsible for monitoring and operations in the communication sector, while the TOC performs the role of overall monitoring and control.

KT plans to build a 5G pilot network in major areas, including the Gangwon-do region where the Olympics will be held, such as Pyeongchang and Gangneung, as well as downtown Seoul, and make the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics the "world's first 5G-based Olympics."

Oh Seong-mok, Vice President of KT’s Network Division, stated, “We plan to complete the construction of the telecommunications network by the end of 2016, build a 5G pilot network in 2017, and showcase KT’s advanced 5G technology at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.”

Meanwhile, on July 1 of last year, KT became the first domestic company to sign an official partner agreement with the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games Organizing Committee and is actively supporting the successful implementation of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
