Transformation into smart home appliances

LG Electronics continues to strengthen its smart home leadership by expanding connectivity between various devices and services.

Following the release of the SmartThinQ™ Sensor in the third quarter, which transforms ordinary home appliances without smart functions into smart appliances, LG Electronics has now introduced the SmartThinQ™ Hub.

The elongated SmartThinQ Hub serves various roles, including a home gateway that supports smart home services, a notification center that provides useful information such as appliance status, schedules, and weather via a 3.5-inch screen and voice, and a premium speaker that plays music.


The SmartThinQ Hub connects with SmartThinQ sensors to display the operating status of smart appliances as well as general appliances without smart functions on the SmartThinQ Hub screen or a smartphone. The SmartThinQ sensor is a disc-shaped, detachable device with a diameter of about 4 cm that transforms ordinary home appliances without smart functions into smart appliances.

SmartThinQ Hub enables optimal IoT with sensor and wireless communication support.

The SmartThinQ Hub supports various wireless communication technologies such as Zigbee and Wi-Fi, allowing for easy connection with SmartThinQ sensors and smart home appliances.

The SmartThinQ Hub's notification features are also useful. For example, when the laundry is finished, it notifies you of tasks tailored to the appliance's status via screen and voice, saying, "The wash is complete. Please take out the laundry." It is also convenient as it reminds you of schedules entered into Google Calendar, such as meal appointments, picking up children, and doctor's appointments.

Considering customer preferences, LG Electronics has also incorporated a music speaker function into the SmartThinQ Hub. The SmartThinQ Hub plays music stored on a smartphone via Bluetooth. LG Electronics has also incorporated the streaming service of iHeart Radio, a popular internet radio station in the U.S., into this product.

The SmartThinQ Hub also integrates with Iris, the IoT platform of major U.S. retailer Lowe's, and AllJoyn from the AllSeen Alliance.

LG Electronics plans to integrate with various external IoT platforms, including SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus.

Based on collaboration with various smart home appliances, IoT-related accessories such as SmartThinQ sensors and hubs, LG Electronics is introducing four customer-tailored service packages: 'Safety,' which allows users to check the condition of their home and detect intrusions by outsiders; 'Energy,' which monitors energy consumption and provides guidance on energy-saving usage; 'Air Care,' which detects indoor temperature and humidity to provide a comfortable space; and 'Convenience,' which allows users to experience smart home appliances based on SmartThinQ sensors and hubs. LG plans to continuously expand its unique and differentiated service areas in the future.

LG Electronics will unveil the SmartThinQ Hub and other products to the public for the first time at 'CES 2016,' the world's largest consumer electronics show, held in Las Vegas, USA, from the 6th to the 9th of next month. The domestic launch is scheduled for the first half of next year.
