Immersive 8K content transmission through single connection and
demonstration of working superMHL accessories

The MHL Consortium will showcase superMHL™, the latest display technology, at the CES 2016 exhibition.

Visitors will be able to experience a complete 8K home entertainment system based on superMHL technology. The latest MHL standard supports advanced color and HDR (High Dynamic Range), which allows for images with more pixels as well as deeper and brighter colors, enabling imagery closer to actual images. The MHL Consortium conveyed that audio quality has also been significantly improved through object audio support.

Jack Wetherill, consumer electronics analyst at Futuresource, stated: "Home theater users pursue the best picture quality to complement their audio setup. Most of them belong to advanced consumer segments that own large screens and enjoy movie content.

4K adoption rates are already quite high among these users, and 8K is perhaps a natural upgrade path they should follow.

As we have seen with 4K, proper connectivity is critical in delivering content to display equipment. Therefore, superMHL technology will play a very important role in 8K video transmission."


Enjoying LG TV on a larger scale

The superMHL technology built into LG's new 8K Super UHD TV will be demonstrated at the MHL booth during the exhibition period. The 98UH9800 delivers impressive 8K content and immersive audio, depicting what future living rooms could look like. With LG's adoption of superMHL technology, MHL® is expected to further strengthen its position as a leader in innovative A/V connection standards that can meet the rapidly changing demands of the home theater market.

superMHL accessories for simpler connection of more devices


To support 8K and advanced A/V features, MHL has developed a 32-pin superMHL connector. This connector features a slim, consumer-friendly design with reversible orientation (usable either way), and is capable of simultaneously handling audio, video, data, and power. MHL member companies, JCE, and KinnexA will demonstrate superMHL accessories. Through these, consumers can connect their mobile devices, set-top boxes (STB), Blu-ray disc players, AVRs, streaming devices, and other source devices to TVs and displays.

Key features of superMHL include support for 8K video and provision of HDR (High-Dynamic Range) that maintains perfect balance between shadow areas and bright spectrum highlights.

Compatible with approximately 9 million MHL legacy products

Currently, approximately 9 million MHL products are in distribution and use worldwide, with manufacturers consistently introducing new products. The superMHL standard is backward compatible with existing MHL versions 1, 2, and 3, allowing for continued connection and use in any situation.
