TI's New DM8168 Davinci™ Video SoC Delivers Best-in-Class Embedded Video Performance for Video Surveillance and Video Communications

TI has launched the new TMS320DM8168 Davinci™ Video System-on-Chip (SoC), which integrates all functions of an HD multichannel system—including capture, compression, display, and control—on a single chip to continuously meet the growing demand for highly integrated HD video. Designed for video security and video communications, this best-in-class video SoC provides the highest level of integration by including a 1GHz ARM® Cortex™-A8 and a 1GHz TI C674x DSP core. The DM8168 video SoC significantly reduces the total component cost of a system by up to 50% by replacing the functions of more than 10 discrete components, and significantly reduces board space and power consumption.
The DM8168 Video SoC supports up to four times the video compression performance compared to the previous industry-leading 1GHz DM6467T, and delivers best-in-class performance by supporting increased multi-channel density and higher resolution. In addition, HD video pre-processing and post-processing capabilities have been significantly enhanced, and by supporting unprecedented video performance, it provides higher video quality for video security and video communication applications at relatively low bit rates. Through advanced video analytics capabilities and enhanced 2D and 3D graphics, the innovative DM8168 Video SoC delivers the performance of a 16-channel DVR on a single video SoC, significantly reducing the cost and complexity of DVR systems compared to previous generation digital video processors. Key Features and Advantages of the DM8168 Video SoC System
• Provides 8-channel D1 decoding capabilities along with simultaneous 16-channel H.264 High Profile D1 encoding with CIF multi-streaming for hybrid security DVR solutions, as well as video compositing and graphics combination capabilities supporting up to three independent displays.
• Simultaneously supports 3 channels of 1080p (60pfs) for video communication applications, and reduces glass-to-glass latency to less than 50ms by eliminating off-chip inefficiencies through codec latency of less than 1ms.
• Exceptional integration including a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8, 1GHz TI C674x floating-point DSP, multiple 2nd generation programmable HD video image coprocessors, an innovative HD video processing subsystem, and comprehensive support for H.264, MPEG-4, and VC1 codecs at HD resolution
• Provides flexibility in design implementation through multiple interfaces such as Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express, SATA2, DDR2, DDR3, USB 2.0, MMC/SD, HDMI, and DVI.
• Glueless interface of 4 TVP5158 multi-channel video decoders to fully capture up to 16 D1 video channels. TI's TVP5158 decoder automatically controls contrast and reduces noise to improve compression ratio and overall video quality, thereby eliminating the need for additional FPGAs and external memory while simplifying the design and providing enhanced system flexibility.
