SK Telecom and Ericsson to Establish 5G Trial Network

'Device-Wireless Network-Wired Infrastructure' Interoperability Performance Testing Plan
Test network development work to verify the performance of 5G technologies and services is ramping up. SK Telecom announced on the 11th that it has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Ericsson (CEO Hans Vestberg), a global telecommunications technology company, for 5G trial network development.
The MoU signing ceremony held at Ericsson headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden was attended by Park Jin-hyo, Head of Network Technology at SK Telecom, and Per Navinger, Senior Vice President of Radio Product Development at Ericsson. The two companies plan to build a trial network capable of providing 5G services through 'device-wireless network-wired infrastructure' interoperability and test the performance of core 5G technologies.
5G is expected to achieve speeds of 20Gbps or higher, hundreds of times faster than LTE. SK Telecom forecasts that when 5G becomes commercialized, the transmission of ultra-high-capacity content such as holograms and virtual reality, which cannot be transmitted at current network speeds, will become possible.

The two companies plan to jointly research and develop technologies required for '5G device-wireless network-wired infrastructure' interoperability by year-end, while simultaneously providing customers with an environment to directly experience 5G technologies and services through trial network deployment.
Park Jin-hyo, Head of Network Technology at SK Telecom, stated, "Through the efforts of global ICT leaders including SK Telecom, core 5G technologies are being developed and stabilized faster than expected," and added, "We will continue our efforts toward world-first 5G pilot services and commercialization through the establishment of trial networks in real-world environments."
Per Navinger, Senior Vice President of Radio Product Development at Ericsson, said, "SK Telecom and Ericsson have maintained close cooperation since signing the MoU for 5G joint research and development in July 2014," and stated, "Going forward, the two companies will lead the evolution of global 5G technology based on the trial network."

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.
