Maxim Announces Power Management IC Solution for Samsung's Next-Generation Application Processor
Chipset solution combining Maxim's MAX8997 power management IC with Samsung's application processor
—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) announced a power management IC (PMIC) solution at Mobile World Congress 2011 being held in Barcelona. This is Maxim's PMIC solution for Samsung's Exynos 4210 application processor developed for handheld systems. This solution integrates system logic together with various firmware and circuits required for power supply management and battery charging, enabling users to enjoy enhanced multimedia capabilities. Chae Lee, Vice President of Maxim's Handheld Power Business Division, stated, "Today's consumers are looking for thinner smartphones that are always connected, provide a rich user experience, and offer very long battery life," and added, "Through close collaboration with Samsung, we have developed a highly integrated power management solution that meets these high expectations."
Maxim's MAX8997 PMIC is the successor to the MAX8998 PMIC mounted on Samsung's S5PC110 application processor. The MAX8997 utilizes Maxim's advanced BCDMOS process and cutting-edge technology to deliver superior efficiency and integration compared to previous products. This technology satisfies the high-performance requirements of Samsung's Exynos 4210 and enhanced graphics processor while maximizing battery life and enabling easier development of thin form factor phones.
The MAX8997 integrates seven high-efficiency step-down converters, 21 low-dropout linear regulators (LDOs), a battery charger, micro-USB interface, RTC with alarm functionality, haptic feedback motor driver, camera flash LED driver, 12 general-purpose I/O (GPIO), and I2C interface for programming. In addition, Maxim's proprietary ModelGauge™ power management technology (MAX17040–MAX17043) is utilized
