FLIR Systems Korea announced that the grand prize winner of the first FLIR Thermal Imaging Photo Contest was 'Is Your Laptop Hot?', the best prize winner was 'Electric Plate Temperature Distribution', and the excellence prize winner was 'Another Eye'.

This contest received approximately 100 entries in thermal imaging photos that can raise awareness of safety, accidents, and fire prevention in everyday life, including household heating appliances such as electric heaters, electric blankets, and radiators, as well as outdoor air conditioner units, automobile engine rooms, circuit breakers, distribution panels, transformers, and various industrial manufacturing facilities. The judges selected the winning works based on whether they captured the theme of safety with novel materials and perspectives, and whether they effectively utilized the various functions of the FLIR thermal imaging camera. To ensure a fair evaluation, differences in performance and resolution depending on the camera model used for shooting were excluded from the judging criteria.

Photo submission of personal experience of being burned by laptop

The grand prize-winning work, “Is your laptop hot?” (Entrant: Hye-young Park) warns of the risk of burns caused by overheating from laptops. The entrant explained that she got burned while using her laptop on her thighs, and when she took pictures with a thermal imaging camera, she was able to confirm that the fan was covered in dust and was not dissipating heat properly, causing the temperature to reach 85°C. This work was selected based on the evaluation that it effectively analyzed the risk of burns and the cause of heat generation using a thermal imaging camera, using laptops as its subject matter, one of the most widely used electronic devices in daily life.

Most of the entries focus on high-temperature heat sources using a thermal imaging camera.

The best award-winning work, 'Electric Blanket Temperature Distribution (Submitter: Park Sang-tae),' analyzed the temperature distribution of electric blankets, one of the representative household heating appliances in winter, and the resulting fire hazard, and was evaluated to have made good use of the theme and material of everyday safety. 'Another Snow (Submitter: Jo Young-gyu),' which took a photo of an ice sheet formed by melted snow on a parking lot entrance road to raise awareness of slipping accidents in winter, was selected as the best award-winning work in recognition of its novel idea and materiality. This is because, unlike most submissions that focused on high-temperature areas using thermal imaging cameras, this one focused on the potential risk of accidents that could occur in low-temperature areas.

In addition, 50 works received encouragement awards, including 'Electrical Facility Deterioration, Don't Move! (Submitter: Oh Geon-seon)', which effectively utilized the function of a thermal imaging camera to capture the overheating condition caused by poorly constructed wire terminals, and 'Cleaning the Inside Floor of a Melting Furnace (Submitter: Jeong Jin-min)', which vividly captured the thrilling moment of removing sludge from the floor of an aluminum melting furnace at a high temperature of 660°C.

FLIR Systems Korea stated, “We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in the contest and showed great interest and support for the event,” and added, “We hope that this event will help raise awareness about safety, accidents, and fire prevention that may occur around us.” FLIR also added, “Through the works submitted to this contest, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of the actual work environments and equipment utilization cases of thermal imaging camera users,” and “Based on this, we plan to pursue more effective and satisfactory customer support activities.”

The winners of this contest will receive a variety of prizes. The grand prize winner will receive a FLIR C2 handheld thermal imaging camera, the runner-up will receive a FLIR TG165 thermal imaging camera, and the excellence prize winner will receive a wireless headset. Additionally, the 50 encouragement award winners will each receive a 10,000 won mobile coupon for purchasing coffee beverages, and the winners will be individually notified of the results.
