KT announced that it has opened the nation's only children's experiential smart farm on Imjado Giga Island. At the Imja Elementary School smart farm, crops can be monitored in real time, and greenhouse facilities can be automatically opened and closed, as well as temperature and humidity can be automatically controlled anytime and anywhere using smart devices.

Students at Imja Elementary School cultivate local specialties such as green onions, broccoli, and cabbage, and plant tulips, the school's official flower, at a smart farm set up in a corner of the playground. They can experience actual farm ICT through the use of a complex environmental control system and a video surveillance system. Imja Elementary School is the only school in Korea with such an experiential smart farm designed for children's education.

The integrated environmental control system installed in the smart farm collects data through temperature and humidity sensors installed in the greenhouse. By checking this data via smartphone, it enables real-time responses to the growing environment, such as adjusting sunlight based on temperature and performing smart irrigation according to humidity. Furthermore, students can remotely manage the farm via smartphone anytime and anywhere, even outside of the hands-on experience area provided at school.

The video surveillance system, utilizing CCTVs with zoom capabilities, allows for precise monitoring of not only entry and exit from the smart farm but also crop growth conditions and the occurrence of pests and diseases. In addition, there are plans to open the smart farm to students from nearby schools for career experience education, developing it into a career experience learning center for all students on Imjado.

Park Jeong-ae, Principal of Imja Elementary School, shared her thoughts on the day, stating, “Due to the characteristics of the island region, students on Imjado face limitations in experiencing various cultures,” and added, “I am very happy that the KT experiential smart farm has created an educational site where students can directly cultivate the crops featured in their textbooks.”

Yoon Jong-jin, Executive Vice President and Head of Public Relations at KT, who participated in the event, said, “It is very meaningful to provide a vivid educational environment for the students of Imjado using KT’s smart ICT technology,” adding, “KT will continue its pro bono activities to bridge the digital divide by applying ICT technology to remote island and mountainous regions.”

The smart farm established by KT is operated jointly by actual residents and students of Imjado Island, and is based on voluntary community participation, such as consulting with local agricultural experts for crop cultivation. Students at Imja Elementary School can participate in future-oriented agricultural experiences by receiving training on crop cultivation from local experts, and the plan is to practice sharing by delivering the vegetables grown at the smart farm to underprivileged neighbors.
