900V devices added to the InnoSwitch™-EP family of offline CV/CC flybacks

Power Integrations announced the addition of a 900 V device to its InnoSwitch™-EP family of offline CV/CC flyback switcher ICs.

This product operates on high voltage DC and three-phase power sources used in industrial, motor drive, metering and renewable energy applications, standard AC voltage applications, and is suitable for power supplies that must operate continuously during AC line increases and surges.

The 900V InnoSwitch-EP IC eliminates heatsinks and enables ultra-compact power supplies, resulting in high efficiency. Typically, the company says, that's 85% for a dual-output 18W design.

“Designers of high-voltage systems often need to squeeze out a few milliwatts to feed low-voltage microprocessor systems or tens of watts for inverter gate drivers while handling megawatts of power,” said David Chen, director of applications engineering at Power Integrations. “The new 900 V InnoSwitch-EP devices enable the design of robust, reliable power supplies that operate at commonly available industrial voltages.”

Power Integrations' InnoSwitch-EP family of ICs, launched last year, utilizes the company's innovative and proven safety-critical FluxLink™ magnetic-inductive coupling technology and includes a synchronous current scheme with accurate secondary-side regulation, creating a stable, high-efficiency power supply circuit that eliminates the need for an optocoupler.

Suitable for industrial, three-phase power supply applications, featuring high safety features

The new product features an improved 900V power MOSFET that provides improved reliability and operating life, providing significant operating benefits in 450VAC industrial systems. When continuously operating with input voltages up to 450 VAC, an optional input UV/OV protection prevents the IC from switching and protects the circuit up to 650 VAC. This flexibility offers designers a significant advantage when designing power supplies that meet all global conditions.

The 900V InnoSwitch-EPIC minimizes the bill of materials (BOM) and improves power supply reliability by eliminating optocouplers, which degrade over time. The device complies with all international energy efficiency standards, including ENERGY STAR, the California Energy Commission, the European Union Code of Conduct (CoC), the ErP Directive, and U.S. Department of Energy standards. It also meets UL1577 and TUV (EN60950) safety approvals, and EN61000-4-8 (100 A/m) and EN61000-4-9 (1000 A/m).
