Expanding Video Editing Storage Capacity to Improve System Overload

Quantum (Branch Manager Lee Kang-wuk) announced that it has supplied Quantum's file sharing appliance 'StorNext M440' and 'StorNext File System Software' to Lotte Home Shopping to improve system security, increase work efficiency, and enhance the broadcast video production environment.

Through Quantum's StorNext 5, the video editing storage capacity was expanded from the existing 200TB to 500TB, enabling improvement of system overload. During the additional system expansion, an integrated archiving storage system that flexibly integrates with the existing system without broadcast interruption was constructed in approximately two weeks, which was industry-first.

By utilizing Quantum's StorNext M440 appliance, the video editing and production environment was optimized, increasing the efficiency of broadcast video production operations and significantly improving system stability. Additionally, it is expected that rapid one-stop maintenance service will be provided even when system errors occur in the future.



The company has been storing video data for more than 10 years in its existing integrated storage, and issues of reduced efficiency and system overload due to storage capacity and aging systems have emerged as it utilizes approximately 100,000 video contents. In particular, multiple video editors and related personnel have been using original video materials, work-in-progress edited videos, and final edited production videos all together in the CMS system, causing frequent system overload when working with large-capacity video files.

Managing and Accessing Storage by Business Operations Following Archiving Storage System Construction

To resolve this, a project to introduce additional storage and construct an archiving storage system for improving the content database operational environment was implemented to enable video creators to collaborate quickly and perform their tasks while safely managing and storing large-capacity data.

For the introduction of new storage, Lotte Home Shopping's broadcast system administrators prioritized storage and solutions that could operate flexibly integrated with the existing storage and support archiving functions. Additionally, the broadcast system administrators comprehensively considered whether the storage provides high reliability for data storage, high scalability to easily add drives and slots as data volume increases, user-friendly operation, and rapid technical support service provision in case of failure.

Accordingly, the broadcast system administrators ultimately decided to introduce the 'StorNext M440 Metadata Appliance', a high-performance file sharing and policy-based file tiering management-supporting large-capacity content archiving (original storage) solution from Quantum.

Flexible Integration with Existing CMS System, Archiving Storage Configuration Improving Production Environment and Increasing Work Efficiency

Additionally, broadcast system administrators have been able to have the administrator control access permissions for each video material in situations where all video data is uploaded to the video production storage for work, and IO (input/output) performance has been greatly improved, resulting in overall significant improvement in work efficiency. Along with this, StorNext provides a separate 'metadata array' as a dedicated storage for metadata only, providing faster data search speed and secure protection of metadata.

By utilizing StorNext 5, broadcast system administrators enable in-house video creators to simultaneously access and use various operating system-based platforms, various video editing programs, and rich media applications, and by easily identifying and utilizing files stored on multiple hosts, work efficiency has been greatly increased. Additionally, by creating a shared pool that manages servers and storage together, the time required to process and deliver content has been greatly reduced.

In particular, the StorNext M440 appliance is fully compatible with Apple SAN File System (Apple Xsan) and can be effectively utilized in a creative work environment. Additionally, the StorNext M440 appliance supports integration with representative media resource management, editing, production, codec conversion, and playback programs provided by Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Avid, and Telestream.

StorNext 5 is organically linked with the Tape Library's iLayer software that supports system monitoring, and through diagnostic services, library resource management, and library internal I/O management functions, it reduces the effort of having to individually verify many existing tapes and inspect their contents, greatly improving management convenience.
