Gyeonggi Province Hosts World's Largest Esports Tournament
Published2016.04.26 17:45Gyeonggi Province has succeeded in hosting the IEM (Intel Extreme Masters) World Championship, an esports tournament.
On the 25th, Gyeonggi Province announced that Gyeonggi Governor Nam Kyung-pil, Intel Senior Vice President Gregory Bryant, and Intel Korea CEO Kwon Myung-sook had agreed on the 'IEM Gyeonggi Hosting Agreement' to host the 2016 IEM World Championship in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
Under this agreement, the IEM World Championship, which will be held at the Goyang Indoor Gymnasium for three days starting December 16 this year, is an international esports tournament sponsored by Intel and organized by the German esports company ESL (Electronic Sports League). It began in 2006 and is currently in its 11th season.
Gyeonggi Province and Intel also agreed to separately pursue cooperation for joint marketing, including joint seminars, trade shows, and new product demonstrations, to revitalize the gaming industry. Intel plans to actively support the successful hosting of the Goyang City tournament through additional marketing activities, as Asia is the region with the greatest growth in the gaming industry.
In his opening remarks, Governor Nam Kyung-pil stated, “The game industry is a collection of cultural content that exerts significant influence on other industries such as software, storytelling, and music, and is the core of the Korean Wave.” He added, “We will spare no support to ensure that the successful hosting of IEM leads to the revitalization of South Korean esports and the promotion of the Korean game industry.”
Gregory Bryant, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Connected Home & Commercial Client Group, stated, “Korea is one of the important markets for Intel, which has been expanding its investments in the gaming and esports sectors to provide the best gaming experience to gamers worldwide. This naturally led to the decision to host IEM in Gyeonggi-do.” He added, “Intel will continue to innovate in gaming through the latest technologies such as Intel Core processors and Intel RealSense, and will continue to provide gamers with new and exciting gaming experiences.”
