Altera Launches MAX V CPLD Product Family: 50 Percent Reduction in Total Power Compared to Comparable CPLDs
— Altera (NASDAQ: ALTR) announced the launch of the MAX® V device family as a new addition to its widely used CPLD products. The MAX V family maintains the instant-on, single-chip, and non-volatile characteristics of the original MAX series while consuming only half the total power of competing CPLDs.
The new MAX V CPLD, with a logic density of 40 to 2,210 logic elements (LE), enables high performance with low power consumption, making it suitable for use in general-purpose and portable device designs in various markets including wired, wireless, industrial, consumer electronics, computer/storage, automotive, broadcasting, and military sectors.
MAX V CPLDs consume up to 50 percent less total power compared to other CPLDs on the market with the same logic density. In addition, as another power advantage, quiescent power is as low as 45 μW, extending battery life. Furthermore, MAX V CPLDs provide more I/O and logic for the same footprint at the same price as competing CPLDs, allowing design designers to reduce costs. All products in the MAX V product family are available in various low-cost halogen-free package types (EQFP, TQFP, MBGA) that meet environmental standards.
Key Applications of the MAX V Product Family:
• I/O Expansion – Increases the available I/O capacity of other standard devices efficiently and at low cost by performing I/O decoding.
• Interface Bridging – Converts bus protocols and voltages between incompatible devices at the lowest cost.
• Power Management – Manages and monitors the power-up sequencing of other devices on the board.
• Configuration and Initialization – Controls the configuration and initialization of other devices on the board.
• Analog Control – Digitally controls standard analog devices (light, sound, motion) via pulse-width modulation (PWM) without requiring a digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
