Integrating core functions to reduce board space, design, and test time

STMicroelectronics (ST) has released the STBC02, a battery charge management IC that significantly improves functional integration without compromising performance or power consumption.

This highly integrated IC incorporates the most commonly used features in power management for wearable and portable products. It includes linear battery charging, a 150mA LDO (Low Drop-Out) voltage regulator, two SPDT (Single-Pole/Double-Throw) load switches, a smart reset/watchdog function, and a PCM (Protection Circuit Module) that protects against battery damage in fault conditions.

According to independent market research firm IDC, the wearable market reached 78 million units in 2015, recording an average annual growth rate of 172%. The STBC02 provides the optimal solution for this market. It helps reduce application footprints and simplify designs to lower costs and shorten time-to-market for wearable products across healthcare, fitness, messaging, and social applications.

All functions of the STBC02 are simply controlled using the SWIRE protocol, which requires only one microcontroller I/O pin, and battery life can be extended because current consumption during normal operation is minimized.

Key features of the STBC02 include an integrated PCM (Protection Circuit Module) that allows the use of lithium-ion batteries without a separate protection chip, and an integrated power path that enables simultaneous battery charging and power supply to the entire system.

In addition, the built-in smart reset/watchdog function enhances system stability and enables full recovery in the event of a software error, while the adjustable Vbatt floating voltage allows for the use of lithium-ion batteries with different chemical properties and customized charging planning. With a 10nA shutdown current, it extends commercial battery life and monitors the battery on demand for system controllers.
